According to international news agency, the accident occurred when a Lanhsa Airlines aircraft took off at night from Roatán, a popular tourist destination in Honduras, and was enroute to the port city of La Ceiba in the country’s central region.

Aircraft Veered Right Before Crashing into the Sea

Carlos Padilla, an official from the Honduran Civil Aviation Authority, stated that the plane veered sharply to the right immediately after takeoff and plunged into the water.

A local fisherman, who was out at sea at the time, told HCH TV Channel that the aircraft nearly crashed right above them.

Casualties and Survivors

The Honduran Fire Department confirmed the following:

  • 12 fatalities have been reported so far.
  • Five passengers were rescued alive.
  • One person remains missing.

Local media reports indicate that among the deceased was Aurelio Martínez, a renowned Honduran musician and prominent figure in Garifuna music.

Major Wilmer Guerrero of the fire department stated that the injured survivors include a 40-year-old French citizen, who has been transported to a hospital in San Pedro Sula for further medical treatment.

Details of the Plane Crash

According to police reports, the aircraft was carrying 15 passengers, along with three crew members, including two pilots and a flight attendant.

The crash occurred approximately one kilometer from the shore.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the British-manufactured Jetstream 41 model aircraft suffered from a “technical malfunction”, which is believed to have caused the crash.
