Punjab has announced a public holiday on March 28 in Lahore

LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced a Lahore public holiday on March 28. The decision comes ahead of the annual Mela Chiraghan festival. The event marks the Urs of the famous Sufi saint Shah Hussain, also known as Madhu Lal Hussain.

The government said the Lahore public holiday will apply only within Lahore district. All offices under the district administration will remain closed on that day. However, the holiday will not extend to other districts of Punjab. Normal routine will continue in the rest of the province.

Officials shared that the step will help manage the large number of visitors expected in the city. Every year, thousands of people gather around the shrine of Shah Hussain during this festival. Therefore, authorities want to reduce traffic and ensure better security arrangements.

Mela Chiraghan is one of the most popular cultural and religious festivals in Lahore. The name means “Festival of Lights.” People light oil lamps and candles around the shrine. This creates a beautiful and spiritual atmosphere at night. Visitors also enjoy traditional music and qawwali performances.

Many devotees take part in dhamaal and other spiritual rituals. Families visit the shrine to pay respect and seek blessings. At the same time, food stalls and small shops set up near the area. This adds to the festive environment and attracts even more people.

The Lahore public holiday also gives residents a chance to join the celebrations. Many people plan their visits in advance. As a result, the city becomes more active and lively during these days.

Shah Hussain remains an important figure in Punjab’s history. He was born in 1538 in Lahore during the Mughal era. He later became a well-known Sufi poet. His poetry focused on love, human connection, and devotion to God. His work still inspires people across the region.

He is widely known as Madhu Lal Hussain due to his close bond with his companion Madho Lal. This relationship became a symbol of spiritual love and unity. Because of this, his message continues to attract followers from different backgrounds.

The annual Urs marks the death anniversary of Shah Hussain. For Sufis, this day celebrates union with the Divine rather than mourning. That is why the event carries a joyful and spiritual tone. People come together to remember his teachings and spread his message of peace.

Security agencies and local administration usually make special arrangements for the festival. They deploy extra staff to control crowds and maintain order. Cleanliness and transport plans are also improved during this period.

The Lahore public holiday on March 28 reflects the cultural and spiritual importance of Mela Chiraghan. The festival not only honors Shah Hussain but also highlights Lahore’s rich heritage. It continues to bring people together through faith, music, and tradition every year.
