Pakistan launched airstrikes in Afghanistan on Friday after the Afghan Taliban announced an offensive against Pakistani military posts near the border. This marks a sharp escalation in tensions between the two neighbors.
Afghanistan’s Taliban government said it attacked Pakistani military bases on Thursday night. In response, Pakistan bombed targets in Kabul and the provinces of Kandahar and Paktika, which lie close to the 2,600km (1,615 miles) shared border.
Details are still emerging, and it is unclear whether there are casualties on either side.
The strikes are the most significant development in the ongoing border tensions. Last October, both countries agreed to a ceasefire after a week of deadly clashes.
The situation remains fluid as both governments monitor developments along the border.
