US President Donald Trump will travel to China in May for his first visit in eight years. The trip was postponed due to the ongoing Iran war.
Trump announced on Truth Social that he will visit Beijing on May 14-15. He said he will also host Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington later this year.
“Our representatives are finalising preparations for these historic visits,” Trump said. “I look forward to spending time with President Xi in what will be a monumental event.”
The White House said Xi understood the reasons for the delay. China’s embassy gave no details about Xi’s schedule.
Trump’s last trip to China was in 2017. This visit will mark their first in-person talks since October 2025 in South Korea.
During the two-day Trump China visit, leaders are expected to discuss trade, agriculture, and aeroplane parts. They may also address Taiwan, where tensions remain high.
Trump has increased US arms sales to Taiwan during his second term, angering Beijing. The Iran war could also affect the timing and tone of the visit. Trump has asked major oil consumers, including China, for support, but China has not responded.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the trip was delayed because Trump needed to stay focused on combat operations. She added that they estimate the Iran war could change in four to six weeks.
