Pasa condemns abduction of civil servant’s children in Peshawar
ISLAMABAD: Pasa condemns abduction of a senior officer’s two minor children in Peshawar, calling it a grave matter of concern that demands an urgent state response.
Armed assailants forcibly entered the residence of Ikramullah Khan, a senior member of the association, and took the two young siblings, according to a statement issued by Pasa.
“This deeply disturbing incident is a grave matter of concern and underscores the urgent need to safeguard the lives, security and dignity of public servants and their families,” the association said.
Pasa condemns abduction: the demands
The association called on the authorities to take all possible measures for the immediate and safe recovery of the children. It also demanded a thorough and expeditious investigation and urged that the culprits be brought to justice.
Pasa further asked the authorities to review and strengthen security measures so that such incidents do not recur in any part of the country. “Pasa stands firmly with Ikramullah Khan and his family in this deeply distressing hour and expresses its sincere hope for the safe and prompt recovery of the children,” the statement said.
The association argued that civil servants carry out responsibilities of public importance on behalf of the state and are entrusted with implementing the policies and priorities of the government of the day. Their ability to do that work, it said, depends on the assurance that they and their families are protected from threats, intimidation and criminal acts.
The case so far
The incident took place at the officer’s residence in Peshawar’s Hayatabad township, close to the Hayatabad police station. The News reported that armed men broke into the house, held the family hostage and fled with some valuables along with the two children. Family sources cited in a local news report said 14 unidentified individuals were involved and that the children are an eight-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy.
Four days after the incident, police had still found no clue to the children’s whereabouts, The News reported. Senior police officials did not respond to queries about the case, which has raised serious questions about the law and order situation in the provincial capital.
The abduction has shocked Peshawar because it happened in an upscale locality and involved an officer who had been serving in a key position in the provincial government until last week. Kidnapping incidents have been rising in several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with police officials, government employees and their families among those targeted in Bannu, the Dera Ismail Khan division, Peshawar and Khyber in recent months. Security concerns have already forced the shifting of the National T20 tournament out of Peshawar.
