History
From Embassy Row to International Court
Sixty years on Massachusetts Avenue, then a purpose-built new home.
From 1951 to 2011, Pakistan’s embassy stood on Washington’s famous Embassy Row, in the former Francis B. Moran House at 2315 Massachusetts Avenue NW (with a chancery annex at 2201 R Street NW). In 2011 the mission moved to its current purpose-built chancery at 3517 International Court NW — a building whose architecture is partly modelled on Lahore’s Naulakha Pavilion, the 17th-century Mughal masterpiece.
The move reflected a growing mission: a diaspora of roughly half a million Pakistani Americans, expanding trade ties, and a bilateral relationship that has swung between close partnership and strain across seven decades.
Diplomacy
The Ambassador & Bilateral Ties
Who represents Pakistan in Washington — and what the mission works on.
Rizwan Saeed Sheikh is Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, having assumed charge in August 2024. A career diplomat, he has focused on trade and investment ties, diaspora engagement, and Pakistan’s role in regional diplomacy — including, per 2026 filings, discussions on the US-Pakistan bilateral relationship and Pakistan’s part in peace negotiations.
The embassy also works the other direction: cultural outreach, educational exchanges, and press relations that shape how Pakistan is understood in Washington. On the Pakistani side of the relationship, the US maintains its embassy in Islamabad’s Diplomatic Enclave with consulates in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. Read more on Pakistan in Washington →
