Career

Four-time finance minister

Before foreign affairs, Dar was Pakistan’s finance minister four times (1998–99, 2008, 2013–17, 2022–23) and Leader of the House in the Senate. A chartered accountant by training and a close associate of Nawaz Sharif, he is one of the PML-N’s most senior figures.

Active on every front

Since March 2024, Dar has led Pakistan’s diplomacy at the UN General Assembly, the SCO, the ECO (which he chaired in 2026–27) and in the Pakistan–Saudi Arabia–Türkiye trilateral framework, including the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement signed in August 2025. In October 2026 he was managing the diplomatic fallout of regional tensions with Iran and the Houthi–Saudi conflict.
