Petrol Falls Rs2.90 to Rs390.23 a Litre as Diesel Edges Up

The federal government has cut the price of petrol by Rs2.90 a litre to Rs390.23 for the next 24 hours, while high-speed diesel is 31 paisas dearer at Rs396.96 a litre, according to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority’s latest daily update.

The new rates take effect from tonight and stay in place until the next daily revision. It is the second price move in two days: in yesterday’s revision, petrol was raised by Rs1.20 to Rs393.86 while diesel was cut by 17 paisas to Rs396.65, as announced on October 14.

What the petrol price Pakistan revision changes

Petrol now costs Rs390.23 a litre, down from Rs393.86. Diesel costs Rs396.96, up from Rs396.65. The gap between the two fuels has narrowed again: diesel is now only Rs6.73 a litre dearer than petrol, after spending much of the past two months well above petrol.

OGRA’s daily pricing mechanism revises both fuels every 24 hours, replacing the old fortnightly system. Since daily pricing began, petrol has risen by Rs79.81 a litre in total and diesel by Rs72.78 a litre, according to ProPakistani’s running tally.

A week of falls for petrol

Petrol has dropped steadily over the past week. Our own coverage of each daily revision shows the trend:

DatePetrol (Rs/litre)Diesel (Rs/litre)
Oct 15390.23396.96
Oct 14393.86396.65
Oct 13392.66396.82
Oct 12395.37396.85
Oct 9398.30396.24
Oct 8398.96395.72

Petrol is Rs8.73 a litre cheaper than it was on October 8, when it stood at Rs398.96. Diesel, by contrast, is Rs1.24 a litre dearer over the same week, climbing from Rs395.72 to Rs396.96.

The table shows petrol shed Rs8.73 a litre between October 8 and October 15, and the latest revision marks the largest single-day cut in the series at Rs3.63 a litre.

What it means for commuters

For drivers, the cut is worth real money at the pump. A 40-litre fill of petrol now costs about Rs15,609, compared with roughly Rs15,958 a week ago, a saving of around Rs349 per tank. The saving is smaller for the daily commuter on a motorcycle, but across a month of refills it adds up.

A motorcyclist covering 40 kilometres a day on a bike averaging 50 kilometres a litre would use roughly 24 litres a month, saving about Rs210 at the new rate.

The relief comes at a sensitive moment. Fuel prices feed directly into transport fares and food prices, and the IMF’s staff-level agreement on a $1.2 billion tranche keeps inflation firmly in the spotlight. Fuel stood far lower earlier this month, and the government will face pressure to pass on sustained falls rather than pocket them through levies.
