KP police salaries increased, announces Governor Kundi

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has announced a major increase in KP police salaries and welfare benefits for the province’s police force. He made the announcement at a ceremony at the Governor House in Peshawar, where allotment letters for residential plots were distributed among the heirs of 54 police martyrs.

The governor said the new pay package would go beyond what the police expected. Once in force, KP police salaries would become the highest among all provinces.

First major welfare move under governor’s rule

The announcement carries extra weight because of who runs the province right now. Kundi is administering Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under governor’s rule, in place since October 11. This makes the pay package the first major welfare announcement under the new setup.

Kundi has taken centre stage in provincial politics in recent days. He announced a police welfare scheme worth Rs35 million, and the new package builds directly on it. Federal voices have backed the arrangement, with Sanaullah linking governor’s rule to counterterrorism efforts in KP, while Bilawal described governor’s rule as a last option for the province. The backdrop is a fierce power contest, which also saw the KP chief minister Afridi face impeachment pressure from Governor Kundi’s side.

KP police salaries: compensation by rank

The compensation structure for personnel martyred or injured on duty will rise across every rank.

Families of martyred personnel from constable to inspector will receive Rs17 million. Families of officers at the deputy superintendent of police and superintendent of police ranks will receive Rs25 million. For officers in grades 18 and 19, the amount will be Rs30 million, while officers in grade 20 and above will qualify for Rs35 million.

Housing gets its own provision. Families of grade 20 and above officers martyred in service will receive Rs70 million in housing assistance. Officers who suffer permanent disabilities will be eligible for Rs5 million. The governor directed that direct financial assistance for the families of martyred officers will replace the previous arrangement of allocating plots.

Support extends to families too: Rs5 million on the death of an officer’s spouse or child, and Rs3 million on the death of a parent, brother or sister.

Grants for martyrs’ children

Kundi announced a special marriage grant for the daughters of police martyrs. He directed the authorities to set up a mechanism for the free education of martyrs’ children through Sweet Homes and the corporate social responsibility programmes of banks.

17,000 new police appointments

The governor also announced that 17,000 vacant police positions will be filled through new appointments. He said the recruitment would reduce the workload on serving officers and ensure the force has the manpower it needs.

Ceremony and next steps

Chief Secretary Dr Fakhare Alam Irfan, IGP Zulfiqar Hameed, senior officers, Advisory Council members and martyr families attended the ceremony. The governor gave no date for when the new structure takes effect.
