In a photograph that has moved millions around the world, Palestinian children in Gaza City sat on the bare ground to watch Disney’s The Lion King — an outdoor screening held among bombed-out buildings, rubble, and displacement tents in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood on August 30, 2026.
The Viral Photograph
The image was taken by Palestinian photojournalist Omar Ashtawy. It was shared by Palestine’s mission to the United Nations on X (@Palestine_UN) on September 6, 2026, where it was viewed more than 9.2 million times.
The photograph shows children gathered before a large outdoor screen glowing with the animated classic, while destroyed buildings and UNICEF-branded tents surround them. Viewers around the world described the scene as both heartbreaking and hopeful — a rare moment of childhood joy in a landscape of devastation.
Little Wings Mobile Cinema
The screening was organized by Little Wings Cinema, the mobile cinema project of the Masharawi Fund for Films and Filmmakers in Gaza. The initiative was founded by Palestinian filmmaker Rashid Masharawi, born in 1962 in Gaza City and raised in the Shati refugee camp.
Little Wings Cinema carries projectors, screens, games, and music into displacement areas and shelters, bringing films directly to children who have lost access to cinemas and normal childhood routines. The fund launched its first Gaza Children’s Film Festival in November–December 2025 under the slogan “We Love Life, Tomorrow.”
A Glimmer of Hope
For the children who gathered that evening, the screening offered a brief escape — songs and stories unfolding on a screen where, only moments before, there had been only rubble and silence. The viral response to the photograph underscored a simple truth: even amid destruction, childhood endures, and the need for moments of joy remains as powerful as ever.
