Karachi Green Line Extension to Be Completed in FY27, Assures Governor

Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi said on Saturday that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Green Line extension project from Numaish Chowrangi to Municipal Park near Jama Cloth Market will be completed during the fiscal year 2026-27. He added that the federal government has already released its share of funds.

The Karachi Green Line extension covers a 1.8-kilometre route, with stations under construction between Numaish Chowrangi and Municipal Park. The governor gave the timeline during a surprise visit to the construction site, where he stressed the need to accelerate work so the people of the city could benefit from the project at the earliest.

Karachi Green Line extension: federal funds released, stations rising

The governor said stations were being constructed along the route and that the federal government had already released its allocated share of funds for the project. Mr Hashmi described the BRT Green Line as a major project for the city that had significantly improved public transport facilities for residents.

He said the project was initiated during the tenure of former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, who had envisioned a modern mass transit system for the metropolis. The governor added that the city continued to need major transport projects, and providing better commuting facilities to residents remained essential.

Referring to the distribution of powers under the 18th Constitutional Amendment, the governor said the scope for the federal government to directly undertake certain development projects has become limited. However, he assured that the federal government would continue to play its role in the city’s development.

He said Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif had consistently extended support to the city, while Nawaz Sharif’s vision for the city’s development also remained significant.

“Karachi is a dynamic metropolis and a city close to the hearts of all Pakistanis. The entire country takes pride in it,” he said, adding that the development of the city was directly linked to the country’s overall progress.

He said that whenever the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had the opportunity to serve, it had sought to introduce development projects for the city. “The federal government is not oblivious to Karachi’s challenges,” he added.

A day of two BRT stories in Karachi

The Green Line assurance came on the same day Karachi’s other BRT corridor made headlines for the wrong reason. Digging for the Red Line damaged a high-pressure gas pipeline on University Road, suspending supply in parts of the city before SSGC repaired it. The contrast captures Karachi’s transport moment: one corridor racing toward completion with federal funds in hand, the other digging through the city’s utilities to get built.

Transport infrastructure coverage on Feature Pakistan also includes the Hayatabad underpass opening in Peshawar, ML1 railway reforms, and the overnight SSGC gas shutdown in Karachi.
