Pakistani freelancers record earnings set a new benchmark in September 2026. Export receipts touched $197 million, the highest monthly total in the country’s history, according to figures shared by Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad.
The September figure was 11 per cent higher than August and 49 per cent higher than September 2025. It pushed total earnings for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, from July to September, to about $550 million, a 46 per cent rise over the same quarter last year.
Schehzad said the growing freelance economy was turning Pakistan’s young digital talent into exports and non-debt foreign exchange earnings. In a post on X, he called the September number “the highest monthly level ever recorded”.
Pakistani freelancers record earnings cap a strong quarter
The record caps a steady climb through the opening months of the fiscal year. Freelancers earned $175.44 million in July and a combined $352 million in July and August, according to State Bank of Pakistan data.
For the full fiscal year 2025-26, Pakistani freelancers earned a total of $1.76 billion, government data shows. The sector’s receipts are now a visible part of Pakistan’s services exports, alongside the output of established software houses. Earlier analysis on Feature Pakistan has traced how software, freelancing and business process outsourcing together drove the country’s IT exports to a record $4.6 billion in FY26. That momentum matters for the exchequer. Freelance receipts bring in foreign exchange without adding a dollar of debt, at a time when every non-borrowed inflow counts for the current account.
IT exports hit $435 million in September
The freelance record arrived alongside a strong showing for the wider technology sector. Pakistan’s IT and technology exports reached $435 million in September 2026, the second-highest monthly figure on record, Schehzad said.
The September total grew 18 per cent year-on-year and 10 per cent over August. It fell just $2 million short of the all-time monthly high of $437 million set in December 2025. First-quarter technology exports stood at $1.25 billion, up roughly 18 per cent from the same period a year earlier.

Schehzad credited targeted incentives in the FY27 federal budget for exporters, particularly the IT sector, along with the expansion of Pakistan’s digital economy. He said these were supporting exports, high-value jobs and the country’s integration with global markets.
Why more Pakistanis are turning to freelancing
Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) Chairman Ibrahim Amin said the steady growth showed that more Pakistani digital workers were taking part in the global freelancing market.
He said many IT graduates and professionals were turning to freelancing because job openings in the domestic market were limited. This lets them earn foreign exchange while contributing to the national economy.
Income from international clients is helping freelancers support themselves and their families. It is also creating alternative employment for the country’s growing workforce.
Amin added that more investment in training, skills development and support for freelancers could strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global digital economy and lift foreign exchange earnings further in the coming years.
