SALU Cancels 1,184 Fake LLB Degrees in Khairpur Crackdown

Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) in Khairpur has cancelled 1,184 fake LLB degrees, declaring the candidates’ results, transcripts and degree certificates invalid after an inquiry found the records had been entered into the university’s system without lawful authority.

The cancelled records include 658 candidates from the three-year LLB programme and 526 from the five-year programme, according to a university notification dated October 16. The notification states that every examination result, transcript, provisional certificate and degree certificate obtained on the basis of these fake LLB degrees is “invalid, void ab initio” and will not be recognised as lawfully issued by the university.

Fake LLB degrees inquiry covered 2016 to 2018 batches

The action follows resolutions passed by the university’s Syndicate at its 92nd meeting on April 11, 2026. An inquiry committee then examined the examination records of the three-year LLB programme for the passing years 2016, 2017 and 2018, and the five-year LLB programme for the 2017 batch.

The committee checked the university’s official records alongside those of its affiliated law colleges. It identified a number of academic records that it suspected had been entered into the university’s examination records without lawful authority.

In July, the university issued a final public notice on its website and in the national press. It asked the affected candidates to submit documents proving the legitimacy of their records within 15 days. After reviewing the applications and the evidence supplied by the candidates and the affiliated colleges, the committee concluded that the disputed records were not part of the university’s lawful academic record.

A list attached to the notification names the affected candidates and their affiliated colleges, including law colleges in Jacobabad, Kandhkot and Kashmore. The principals of those colleges have been informed.

Bar councils and HEC notified

Copies of the notification have been sent to the Higher Education Commission, the Pakistan Bar Council and the bar councils of Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The step matters because law graduates need enrolment with a bar council to practise, and the cancelled records could include people already working as lawyers.

This is not the first such action by the university. SALU cancelled 1,280 LLB degrees last year in a similar exercise, and earlier this year cases were registered against more than 125 candidates in connection with the same fraud. The pattern points to a long-running racket in which academic records were allegedly inserted into the university’s system through affiliated colleges.

Fake degrees remain a recurring problem across Pakistan. Last year, the FIA registered a case against 58 CDA employees over fake degrees, while the HEC was directed to review university degrees across the country.

Why the crackdown matters for students

For genuine students and their families, the episode is a warning about where they study law. A degree from an affiliated college means little if the university’s own records do not back it up. Before taking admission, students should check whether the institution is recognised and whether its examination records are verifiable.

The university’s decision also protects the value of legitimate degrees. When thousands of fake records circulate, employers and courts lose trust in every certificate a university issues. By cleaning its own rolls — even at the cost of public embarrassment — SALU has moved to restore that trust.

Whether the bar councils act against lawyers holding the cancelled degrees will be the real test. The notification gives them the names; what follows depends on enforcement.
