GQEBERHA: Scott Boland claimed four wickets as Australia tightened their grip on the rain-affected second Test against South Africa at St George’s Park, leaving the hosts in deep trouble at the end of a curtailed second day on Monday.

South Africa, replying to Australia’s first innings, slumped to 40 for 4 before captain Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton steadied the innings with a 52-run fifth-wicket stand. But just as the pair looked to have weathered the storm, Boland struck — and Matt Renshaw produced a stunning one-handed diving catch at first slip to remove Rickelton in the fading light.

Only 77 runs were added for the loss of three wickets in just under 30 overs on a day heavily disrupted by rain. Play began at 3:45pm, six hours behind schedule, after heavy overnight and early-morning rain left wet patches across the outfield. The match has now lost 146 overs in total.

Boland makes his case

Boland’s selection has proved inspired. After taking two wickets in two balls on the opening day, he added two more on day two to register his best figures against South Africa.

He troubled Bavuma from the outset, beating the captain’s bat with the first ball of the day before Bavuma responded with a superb cover drive. Debutant Marques Ackermann managed only six runs in his first Test innings before edging Boland to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, and Boland later found late movement to draw Rickelton’s edge to the slips.

Australia were without an unwell Josh Hazlewood, but the attack barely missed him. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc kept the pressure on, with Starc dismissing the struggling Matthew Breetzke — caught behind attempting a drive — while Beau Webster bowled two early maidens.

Bavuma stands alone

Bavuma, unbeaten on 41 at stumps, was South Africa’s most assured batter throughout. He struck a series of elegant drives and even launched Cummins over the boundary for six, but he kept losing partners.

Rickelton, moved down to number six and handed the wicketkeeping gloves, had looked set before his dismissal. He survived a scare on 26 when Marnus Labuschagne, blinded by glare at leg slip, failed to hold a chance off Cummins — the ball striking him on the chest. His luck ran out against Boland, whose away movement found the edge before Renshaw’s brilliance ended a promising innings. Rickelton has now managed just one half-century in his last 13 Test innings.

Wiaan Mulder joined Bavuma to see out the closing stages without further loss.

Series context

Australia won the first Test by 214 runs on the back of Hazlewood’s six-wicket haul — a result that handed Bavuma his first defeat as captain in 13 matches. South Africa reshuffled for Gqeberha, but the rain has so far denied them any chance to fight back with the bat.

With three days remaining and little rain forecast, Australia will back themselves to force a result and seal the series. For that, South Africa need their captain to bat long on day three — and need the weather, at last, to stay out of it.
