CTD Arrests Eight Suspected Terrorists Across Punjab
Punjab’s Counter Terrorism Department has arrested eight suspected terrorists from different parts of the province and recovered explosive material, the department claimed on Saturday.
A CTD spokesperson said 91 intelligence-based operations were carried out in separate areas of the province, and 91 people were questioned during the sweep.
Who was arrested, and where
The eight suspects were named as Shehzad Akbar, Mahmood, Ali, Nauman, Adnan, Farooq, Rehman and Humayun. They were picked up from Gujranwala, Bahawalpur, Chiniot, Rawalpindi, Bhakkar and Sargodha.
The CTD teams recovered 465 grams of explosive material, three safety fuse wires of 20 feet, two hand grenades, banned material, pamphlets, magazines, a prima card and mobile phones from the suspects.
Seven cases under terrorism charges have been registered against them, the spokesperson said.
The scale of the sweep
Ninety-one operations with 91 people questioned and eight arrests points to a wide intelligence dragnet rather than a single targeted raid. The arrests were spread across six cities, from Gujranwala in the north to Bahawalpur in the south, suggesting the CTD was acting on leads across the province.
Intelligence-based operations have become the CTD’s standard tool against militant networks. Earlier operations this month show the pattern: security forces killed nine terrorists, including commanders, in a North Waziristan IBO, seven more in another North Waziristan operation, three in Dera Ismail Khan, and two wanted militants in Dalbandin, Balochistan.
Saturday’s Punjab sweep fits the same mould, but with arrests rather than encounters, and with cases registered for prosecution.
What happens next
The seven registered cases will move through the anti-terrorism courts. The recovered material, including the prima card and mobile phones, will form part of the evidence as investigators map the suspects’ networks.
