Hasan Nawaz rejoins Desert Vipers for ILT20 season 5
The Hasan Nawaz ILT20 story continues. Desert Vipers have re-signed the Pakistan batter for the fifth season of the International League T20, bringing him back after the franchise’s title-winning campaign earlier this year.
The announcement came on Friday. Nawaz replaces England’s Aneurin Donald, who was picked at the recent auction but became unavailable after earning selection for England’s T20I series in Australia in November and December.
A familiar face returns
Nawaz knows the Vipers dressing room well. He was part of the squad that lifted the Season 4 trophy, and the franchise believes he will settle back in quickly.
Desert Vipers chief executive Phil Oliver welcomed the Pakistan batter’s return and congratulated Donald on his international selection. Oliver pointed to Nawaz’s strong form across franchise cricket this year as the reason for the recall.
The signing deepens the Vipers’ Pakistani core. Nawaz joins Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan and Naseem Shah in a squad that now carries five Pakistan internationals into the new season. The Vipers are notably the only ILT20 franchise not under Indian ownership, which leaves them free to recruit Pakistan players without the restrictions their rivals face.
Form that forced the recall
Nawaz has built a strong 2026. He scored 291 runs in the Pakistan Super League at a strike rate of 134.1, in a season that ended with a sold-out final. He then moved to the Caribbean Premier League, where he made 220 runs for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. He finished as the Falcons’ joint-leading scorer alongside Evin Lewis as the franchise won the CPL title.
His Season 4 numbers with the Vipers were modest with the bat: 124 runs at an average of 15.50. But he contributed in the field, taking 12 catches in 13 matches during the championship run. The franchise clearly values more than his batting average.
His versatility adds to the appeal. Nawaz has batted at five different positions for Pakistan in T20 internationals, from opener down to number six. The Vipers used him mostly as a finisher last season. Yet he showed he can bat higher, smashing 96 off 51 balls at number four against India at the Asian Games in Japan, a knock that nearly carried Pakistan to the gold medal.
That innings made headlines at home, and our own coverage of Nawaz’s 96 against India in the Asian Games final captured just how close he came to a famous chase.
The Hasan Nawaz ILT20 return in context
Season 5 of the DP World ILT20 runs from November 21 to December 20. The Vipers open their title defence against MI Emirates at the Dubai International Stadium, a rematch of last season’s final.
The timing suits Nawaz. He arrives in the UAE with a full year of franchise cricket behind him and a growing reputation as a flexible middle-order option. For a player still establishing himself in Pakistan’s T20 plans, another strong ILT20 campaign would strengthen his case.
Babar Azam’s own move to the Vipers means Nawaz will share the dressing room with Pakistan’s biggest batting star. Pakistan’s white-ball form has been encouraging too, after beating Sri Lanka in the recent T20I series opener.
