India beat New Zealand by four wickets in the India New Zealand T20 opener at Christchurch on Thursday, chasing 226 to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. It is the highest successful run chase in India’s T20 international history, completed in 19.4 overs.
New Zealand had posted 225 for 4 after choosing to bat, their biggest T20 total against India on home soil. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen gave the hosts a flying start, taking the score to 65 for 1 in the powerplay, with Allen striking 45 off 24 balls. Glenn Phillips then took charge with an unbeaten 82 off 40 deliveries, hitting eight fours and three sixes, while Bevon Jacobs chipped in with 31 before being run out.
India’s reply started at full throttle. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma added 93 for the first wicket, with Samson hammering 67 off 33 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, as India raced to 94 for 1 in the powerplay. New Zealand fought back by removing three batters in quick succession, but Shreyas Iyer steadied the chase with 42 off 28 balls and Naman Dhir finished the job unbeaten on 42 to seal victory with two balls to spare.
Records tumble in the India New Zealand T20 opener
The night belonged to the batters. India’s 226-run chase is their highest successful pursuit in T20 internationals, achieved despite a stuttering middle phase. New Zealand’s 225 for 4 was their biggest T20 score against India at home, yet it still was not enough.
Samson’s 33-ball 67 set the tone, and the 93-run opening stand with Abhishek put India ahead of the rate from the start. Phillips’ unbeaten 82 off 40 was the standout innings for the hosts, but it was Dhir’s calm 42 not out that decided the contest.
India’s squad for the New Zealand tour was named earlier this month, with the selectors backing a mix of experience and youth for the five-match series. The tour schedule also includes one-day matches. The region’s cricket has produced several high-scoring thrillers lately: Sri Lanka chased 430 to beat England in the tri-series, while Pakistan overtook Australia in the ICC ODI rankings after their own strong run.
Bowlers pay the price on a batting night
All five Indian bowlers used in the match went at ten runs an over or more as the Christchurch pitch offered little help. Bhuvneshwar Kumar endured a difficult return, conceding 49 runs in four wicketless overs in his first T20 international in four years. His last appearance in the format had also come against New Zealand, back in 2022.
What the captains said
“When they (openers) click, they set up the game for us, and the rest of us try to steady the ship and finish,” India captain Iyer said. “He (Dhir) gives us lots of options. I personally feel the calm and composed nature he showed tonight was magnificent.”
“They (India openers) put us under pressure. Another big powerplay from them. We were not at our best,” New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said. “In the middle, we did well to squeeze them. Tight game and both teams might look at things that could have gone here or there.”
Dhir’s calm finish answers the selection questions
The result also underlined the depth in India’s squad. Ahead of the series, captain Iyer had said young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi “can’t just walk straight into the team” for the New Zealand tour. Dhir’s composed unbeaten 42 under pressure, finishing a record chase, made the case for the next generation doing its talking with the bat.
