ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will play a key diplomatic role this week as it hosts the landmark Islamabad Agreement between the United States and Iran. Leaders and officials will gather in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 19 to formalize the peace deal.
The Islamabad Agreement marks a breakthrough after months of negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Both countries have agreed to end military operations and reduce tensions across the region.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the development while addressing the National Assembly. He described the agreement as a victory for peace and diplomacy. Moreover, he praised Pakistan’s efforts in bringing both sides closer to a lasting settlement.
The Prime Minister said the world would witness the signing of the Islamabad Agreement on Friday. He added that Pakistan worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support dialogue and encourage mutual understanding between the two countries.
Meanwhile, officials confirmed that Tehran and Washington had already completed electronic procedures related to the agreement. As a result, both sides moved one step closer to finalizing the peace process.
Pakistan started its mediation efforts after helping secure a ceasefire earlier this year. Since then, Pakistani diplomats continued discussions with both governments. Consequently, negotiations progressed steadily and eventually produced the Islamabad Agreement.
The deal includes an immediate and permanent halt to military operations across various fronts, including in Lebanon. Furthermore, both countries committed themselves to resolving disputes through diplomatic channels.
Another major development followed the agreement. The United States removed restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz. Therefore, Iranian oil tankers resumed movement through the strategic shipping route.
Political observers view the Islamabad Agreement as one of the most important diplomatic achievements of recent years. In addition, many experts believe the deal could improve regional stability and reduce the risk of future conflict.
