Islamabad Launches Online Driving Licence Services

ISLAMABAD: The new Islamabad online driving licence system went live on Monday. Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) launched online services for learner permits, driving licence renewals and duplicate licences. As a result, residents can complete the process from home without visiting police offices.

According to a police spokesperson, the initiative follows directions from a senior officer. The directions came from Islamabad Inspector General of Police Captain (retd) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry. Furthermore, their aim is to improve public convenience and expand digital services.

How the Islamabad online driving licence system works

Residents can access the new services through the Islamabad Traffic Police web portal. Starting October 19, the authorities will no longer process these applications at Traffic Headquarters in Faizabad. Other police facilitation centres will also stop taking them. In short, the counters are being discontinued for learner permits, renewals and duplicates.

Chief Traffic Officer Kainat Azhar Khan announced home delivery of licences. TCS courier services will deliver renewed and duplicate driving licences directly to applicants’ homes. This extends the TCS home-delivery facility for Islamabad driving licences that Feature Pakistan reported earlier. She added that the service would eliminate unnecessary visits to police offices. In addition, it would save time and make the process more convenient for citizens.

Get the address right, or wait longer

Khan advised applicants to provide their full names, accurate residential addresses and active mobile phone numbers when submitting online applications. However, she warned that incomplete or incorrect addresses could delay delivery of the licence. This is a practical catch. Consequently, the entire model now depends on the courier reaching the applicant’s doorstep.

For residents, the change ends the familiar routine of queuing at Faizabad for routine paperwork. It also shifts the burden of accuracy onto the applicant. A wrong house number or an inactive phone number now means a delayed licence. Previously, a clerk could correct the form on the spot.

Part of a wider digital push

Indeed, the move is the latest step in the capital’s shift toward online civic services. Meanwhile, Islamabad’s administration has been expanding digital access across departments this year. For example, it launched the CDA’s first-ever waste collection service for rural areas. Moreover, it made traffic management changes such as the Rawal Dam Chowk and Kashmir Chowk road closure. For a city where road safety remains a pressing concern, easier legal licences carry a road-safety dividend. As a result, simpler renewals mean fewer drivers tempted to drive on expired documents.

Khan said Islamabad Traffic Police remained committed to providing accessible and convenient digital services. In fact, public convenience and saving citizens’ time are among its top priorities, she added.
