Karachi University to Digitize Academic and Administrative Services
KARACHI: The Karachi University digitization plan will overhaul academic, administrative and financial systems at one of Pakistan’s largest public universities, aiming to improve student services, cut paperwork and increase transparency.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Wasim Qazi has formed a nine-member committee to develop a roadmap for the digital transformation. According to a notification issued on October 11, Professor Dr Nadeem Mahmood of the Department of Computer Science will lead the panel.
Karachi University digitization covers students, faculty and admin
Under the proposed system, students will access university services through their mobile phones. Course materials, assignments, attendance records, examination schedules, results, transcripts, certificates and library resources will all move online.
Admissions, enrollment, course registration, timetables and academic progress tracking will also go digital. Students will be able to submit applications and follow their status online, reducing the need to visit university offices for routine matters.
Faculty members will get digital tools for managing courses, student assessments, attendance and academic records. On the administrative side, the university plans to digitize employee records, salaries, budgeting, procurement and official correspondence.
Four working days for the roadmap
The committee has a tight deadline. It must assess the university’s existing IT infrastructure and recommend a suitable Learning Management System, digital applications, cybersecurity measures and funding requirements.
Within four working days, the panel has been directed to submit its recommendations along with a detailed PC-I project proposal covering estimated costs, technical requirements and a phased implementation plan. The report will go to the vice chancellor for consideration.
The aggressive timeline suggests the administration wants to move from planning to execution quickly, a notable shift for a public-sector institution where such projects often stall at the committee stage.
A wider digital push
The move fits a broader trend of Pakistani public institutions putting services online. NADRA has expanded digital identity services in recent years, including updated guidance for first-time CNIC applicants, as Feature Pakistan reported.
For Karachi University’s tens of thousands of students, the practical test will be delivery. Announcements of digitization are common in Pakistan’s education sector; systems that actually work, from online admissions to digital transcripts, are rarer. The four-day deadline for the roadmap is a promising start, but students will judge the project on whether they can still avoid the long queues at the administration block a year from now.
If executed well, the overhaul could become a template for other public universities wrestling with paper-based systems and overcrowded campuses.
