Key Suspect in Laiba Ijaz Visa Fraud Case Dies After Firing on Police in Islamabad
The prime suspect in the Laiba Ijaz visa fraud case was killed on Tuesday after his own accomplices opened fire on an Islamabad police party in the jurisdiction of Ramna police station. The suspect died in hospital after the shooting, according to a police spokesperson.
Laiba Ijaz, a 20-year-old student at the International Islamic University Islamabad, was said to have been defrauded of millions of rupees she had paid to move to the United States for further studies. An agent was accused of handing her fake travel documents, and her death drew the government’s attention, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directing police to arrest those responsible.
The prime suspect, identified by police as Muhammad Nauman, had shared information about another suspect, the spokesperson said. A police team was taking him to track down the second suspect when four of his accomplices, riding two motorcycles, “opened indiscriminate fire on the police party in an attempt to get the main suspect freed”.
The suspect was hit by bullets fired by his own accomplices. The police team remained safe “due to bulletproof jackets and protective measures”, the spokesperson said. The injured suspect was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Search operations are underway to arrest the remaining accomplices.
The Laiba Ijaz visa fraud case so far
A case following Laiba’s death was registered at Ramna police station under Sections 322 (unintentional murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The Federal Investigation Agency registered a separate case on a complaint filed by Laiba’s maternal uncle under provisions relating to cheating, abetment and immigration-related fraud. According to the FIA, the main suspect had allegedly obtained millions of rupees from Laiba’s family with the help of a female accomplice, misrepresenting his identity and professional status.
The money was allegedly taken on the pretext of securing employment for her brother and arranging her admission to Harvard University in the US. The suspect was accused of giving Laiba fake travel documents.
Geo News reported that Nauman was being taken for a recovery operation based on his identification when the attack happened. ARY News added that investigators have uncovered a separate fraud case against him in Mansehra, where a family accused him of taking Rs8.5 million on the promise of securing government jobs for six children through fake appointment letters.
We have followed this case from the start: her death and the prime minister’s notice on October 10, the suspect’s remand on October 12, the arrests and the FIA case on October 14, and the co-suspect’s interim bail on October 15.
