Maj Muhammad Azhar Shaheed: A Promise Unkept

Twelve days. That was all that stood between him and his wedding.

The 21st of February 2016 was circled on the calendar with joy — the wedding day of Major Muhammad Azhar Shaheed of the Pakistan Army. Instead, on 9 February 2016, he embraced shahadat in a Mushshak aircraft crash near Gujranwala. The wedding preparations turned into funeral prayers.

Major Muhammad Azhar — 115 Long Course, Army Aviation — was flying with Captain Hassan Ahmad Shaheed — 126 Long Course, 66 Medium Artillery, Aviation — when their Mushshak went down near Gujranwala. Both officers embraced shahadat.

Captain Hassan Ahmad was the only son of his parents. Another family’s world, shattered in a single day.

The Morning the Sky Fell

Army Aviation’s flights demand constant courage from their crews. Every takeoff is routine — until it is not. The men who fly accept that reality as part of the profession they chose.

The Mushshak is the trainer on which generations of Pakistan Army aviators have learned to fly. It is a forgiving aircraft in skilled hands — which is precisely why its loss is so keenly felt. When even the familiar goes wrong, the fragility of every flight is laid bare. On the 9th of February 2016, routine became tragedy near Gujranwala, and two officers — one about to be married, one an only son — did not come home.

The Original Tribute

The tribute shared on the tenth anniversary of the crash reads:

Today is 10th shahadat anniversary of Maj Muhammad Azhar Shaheed 115L/C ex Avn, along with Capt Hassan Ahmad Shaheed 126L/C ex 66Med Arty/Avn. On 09 Feb 2016, they embraced shahadat in Mushshak Aircraft crash near Gujranwala. Capt Hassan Ahmad Shaheed was only Son. Maj M Azhar Shaheed was about to get married after few days (21 Feb 2016).

The Wedding That Never Was

Every year on 9 February, the shahadat anniversary is observed — the tenth in 2026. For his family, the date carries a double weight: the anniversary of his martyrdom, and the shadow of the wedding that never happened.

The invitations. The preparations. The happiness of a household counting down to the 21st of February. All of it, overtaken by grief in a single afternoon. The 21st of February 2016 came and went without a wedding — and every 9th of February since has carried its echo.

It is one of the hardest truths about military service: the personal and the professional calendars run side by side, and the professional one can erase the personal in an instant. Major Azhar had done everything right. Served with distinction. Risen to major. Earned his place in Army Aviation. Stood twelve days from married life. None of it protected him. The uniform promises honour, not safety — and on the 9th of February, it collected the honour and exacted the price.

Captain Hassan Ahmad’s story carries its own weight. An only son — 126 Long Course, 66 Medium Artillery, Aviation. His loss is the kind that hollows out a household completely. No brother to carry the name forward. No shared memories to divide the weight of mourning. His parents’ grief has no dilution. It is theirs alone, entire.

They flew together. They fell together. They are remembered together.

Ten years on, the 9th of February still carries that double weight — and the 21st still carries its silence. But the honour they earned that morning has not faded, and it will not.

We salute Major Muhammad Azhar Shaheed and Captain Hassan Ahmad Shaheed. Their dreams were cut short, but their honour is eternal. Remembered with pride — today, and always.
