McCullum Wary of Pakistan’s Home Advantage Ahead of Tri-Series Clash

England head coach Brendon McCullum has warned his players they must adapt quickly to subcontinent conditions as they prepare to face Pakistan in the second match of the ODI tri-series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

“Pakistan’s a very strong side,” McCullum said during a media talk on Monday. “When you come to this part of the world, you have to do things differently. Playing subcontinent teams in subcontinent conditions has its own challenges, but that’s something we’re looking forward to.”

The coach said England wanted to stay flexible rather than lock into one method. “We don’t have any kind of binary process of how we want to go about playing,” he said. “We want to just make sure that we play what’s in front of us, adapt as quick as we can, and hopefully try and play the best cricket we can to give ourselves a chance.”

A tournament with a final at stake

The tri-series also features Sri Lanka, and the top two sides from the double round-robin stage will qualify for the final in Lahore on October 31. McCullum called the format a distinctive test, since teams must adjust to different opponents in quick succession, and framed the tour as useful preparation for next year’s 50-over World Cup.

England arrive with momentum after three consecutive ODI series victories in 2026. But Pakistan at home are a different examination, and McCullum made clear his side respected the strength of both Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Pakistan’s winning start

Pakistan opened their campaign with a 37-run victory over Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on Sunday, a match Feature Pakistan previewed here. A match-winning unbeaten 107 off 90 balls from Salman Ali Agha carried the hosts to 305, before the pace attack bowled Sri Lanka out for 268. Both sides were later fined for slow over-rates in that game.

Salman’s innings was significant beyond the result. After a difficult period in his international career, including being left out of the T20 and Test sides, he rebuilt his form in domestic cricket before earning a recall. Speaking after the match, he called for greater respect for domestic performances, saying scoring runs at that level was not as straightforward as critics suggested.

Who England are missing

McCullum will be without two prominent names. Jos Buttler is recovering from a hamstring injury, while fast bowler Jofra Archer has been rested to manage his workload. Their absence puts added responsibility on the available squad in unfamiliar conditions.

The tourists still have experience to call on. Former captain Joe Root brings stability, Harry Brook leads the white-ball side and will be central to the batting plans, Will Jacks offers options with bat and ball, and leg-spinner Adil Rashid and all-rounder Sam Curran have returned after injuries.

For Pakistan, the pace quartet of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf and Faheem Ashraf shared all ten Sri Lankan wickets on Sunday, though a fifth-wicket stand showed the attack can be challenged once batters settle. Tuesday’s match is the first of two league meetings between the sides; they meet again in Lahore on October 25, while England face Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on Thursday.
