MNA Khurram Nawaz’s Son in Police Custody After Islamabad Crash

Two people were injured in Islamabad on Saturday night after a government vehicle allegedly driven by the son of MNA Raja Khurram Shahzad Nawaz hit their motorcycle at the Daman-e-Koh signal.

The MNA, who chairs the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior, has since confirmed that his son was behind the wheel, according to ProPakistani.

What happened at Daman-e-Koh

According to police, the official car struck the motorcycle while it was standing at the signal. A man and a woman riding the motorcycle were injured and shifted to a nearby hospital. Police reached the scene after being informed and started an investigation.

The vehicle carries registration number GAW-308 and belongs to the National Assembly Secretariat. It was assigned to Khurram Nawaz in his capacity as committee chairman.

MNA confirms his son was driving

Speaking to journalist Tariq Mateen, Khurram Shahzad Nawaz said the accident did happen and that he had handed his son over to the police himself. He said his son was still in police custody.

The MNA confirmed that the vehicle was his official car. He said a driver was present in the car, but his son was the one driving it.

He also said he had checked on both injured people and regretted that the accident happened because of his son. He denied putting any pressure on the police or the victims, after social media users alleged that the injured were being pushed to settle the matter.

Speaker takes notice

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has taken strict notice of the incident, according to journalist Siddeeq Sajid.

Sajid reported that the MNA assured the Speaker he would bear the full cost of repairing the government vehicle. When the Speaker asked why the car had been given to his son, the MNA reportedly did not respond.

The episode has raised fresh questions about the use of official vehicles by family members of public office holders. Government vehicles are issued for official duties, and the case is being watched as a test of how the National Assembly handles the matter internally.

Case registered, bail granted

In a development beyond the initial report, Capital News Point reported that police have registered a case against the MNA’s son, arrested him, and that a court has granted bail. The bail grant suggests the legal process is now running its course through the courts.

The incident occurred in the Margalla foothills area, where Daman-e-Koh road traffic routinely draws police attention on weekends. Road safety in the capital has been a recurring concern — the costs of traffic accidents continue to burden hospitals and families, and NA proceedings have repeatedly taken up governance questions this month.

A recurring pattern in the capital

The case fits a pattern that has repeatedly put Islamabad’s courts and police under scrutiny. In March this year, Dawn reported that capital police had yet to start legal proceedings in a hit-and-run case involving the underage son of an aide to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, despite instructions from the Prime Minister’s Office — the complainant alleged police refused even to receive his application.

In December last year, the teenage son of an Islamabad High Court judge was sent on physical remand after a speeding SUV struck two young women near the PNCA; the victims died, and the case drew intense public attention before the families chose forgiveness. And in February this year, a local court acquitted the daughter of a Supreme Court judge in a 2022 hit-and-run case near the Sohan bridge, after an investigation that had remained stalled for years.

What distinguishes the current case is the response so far: the MNA himself confirmed his son was driving and said he had handed him to the police, and the NA Speaker moved quickly to take notice. Whether that leads to a different outcome than earlier cases is the question readers will be watching.

What happens next

With the case registered and the suspect reportedly on bail, attention now shifts to the investigation. Police will need to establish the sequence of events at the signal, the condition of the injured, and whether any traffic rules were broken.

The Speaker’s notice means the matter is unlikely to end with the criminal case alone. Questions about who authorised the son to drive an official vehicle, and whether Secretariat rules on vehicle use were followed, remain unanswered.
