The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), in partnership with Media Cast, has officially launched the Pakistan Hockey League 2027, a franchise competition meant to revive the country’s national sport and pull it back toward international relevance.

The league was unveiled at a ceremony in Islamabad. Organisers said it would bring together international players, local talent, corporate sponsors and team owners under a professional competition structure.

Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, attended as chief guest and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting hockey. He welcomed cooperation between the government, the private sector and the hockey community, expressing hope that the league would help Pakistan regain its position in international hockey.

PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani said the federation was working on long-term reforms to strengthen the sport, including better playing standards, upgraded infrastructure, expanded facilities, more corporate investment and improved incentives and opportunities for players.

He stressed that professional management, long-term planning and stronger public-private partnerships were essential for the revival of the game.

Salman Danish, owner of Media Cast, said his company would work with the PHF to organise the league professionally, secure corporate sponsorships and build a sustainable commercial model.

Why Pakistan needs a hockey league

Pakistan was once a leading force in world hockey, but the sport has struggled to hold its position in recent years. Funding shortages, weak domestic competition and poor infrastructure have all played a part in the decline.

The federal government has been spending to patch the foundations. Punjab’s Rs400 million upgrade of the national hockey stadium in Lahore, which we covered earlier, is one part of that effort.

The league is meant to do what money alone cannot: create regular, high-quality competition that keeps players match-fit and draws young people back to the game. A franchise model also gives sponsors a visible product to back, which has been missing from domestic hockey for years. The league has been in the works for some time; an earlier announcement set the timeline for its launch.

The challenge is real. Bangladesh’s rise to replace Pakistan at the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, as reported here, showed how far the regional balance has shifted. Pakistan’s bronze medal against South Korea at the Asian Games remains one of the recent bright spots the new league will try to build on.

What the league promises

Organisers said the Pakistan Hockey League 2027 would increase commercial interest in hockey, improve competition standards, attract long-term investment and reconnect younger generations with Pakistan’s hockey history.

The success of the venture will depend on three things: securing solid investment, building a genuinely competitive playing structure and creating lasting development pathways for players beyond the league itself.

Media Cast’s role covers the commercial side: sponsorships, broadcast arrangements and a sustainable business model. The PHF retains the sporting responsibility of making sure the competition meets international standards.

Details of the teams, the player auction or draft, venues and the match schedule are expected to be announced in the coming months.
