Sindh Reaches Out to 100 Firms for Youth Jobs
The Sindh government is reaching out to more than 100 companies to expand internship and employment opportunities for students, graduates and young people starting their careers, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Friday.
In a statement, Sharjeel, who also holds the information, transport and mass transit portfolios, said the provincial government was using its ‘I Work for Sindh’ digital platform to bridge the gap between young people’s skills and market requirements.
The platform by the numbers
The figures Sharjeel shared give a sense of the platform’s scale. It has attracted more than 5.19 million visits, with 136,547 candidates registered and 721 companies on board.
Employers have posted 31,270 job opportunities on the portal, of which 24,766 remain active. Candidates have submitted 473,339 applications through the platform, creating a digital link between jobseekers and prospective employers.
The province is also pairing employment with training. The platform offers access to more than 1,800 internationally recognised short courses. So far, 4,620 candidates have completed their courses while another 5,789 are still in training.
What comes next
Sharjeel said a system was being developed to automatically fold job vacancies from the public and private sectors into the platform, making it easier for candidates to find openings. The government also plans to introduce daily alerts notifying registered users about new job postings.
The initial preparation and implementation of the expanded initiative is expected to take between one and a half and two months.
Reading the announcement
Job announcements for youth are a staple of provincial politics, and the test is always in the placement numbers rather than the press statements. On that measure, the platform’s own figures deserve a closer look.
The ratio of applications to postings, roughly fifteen applications for every job posted, shows demand far outstripping supply, which is no surprise in a province where youth unemployment runs high. The more telling figure is completion: of the 136,547 registered candidates, 4,620 have finished a training course. That is progress, but it also shows how far the platform has to go before training at scale becomes real.
The plan to auto-pull vacancies from both public and private sectors could change the picture if it works. A portal that updates itself with fresh openings daily would be genuinely useful to a graduate in Hyderabad or Sukkur who currently depends on word of mouth and newspaper classifieds. The daily alerts point in the same direction.
Still, 24,766 active postings against more than 136,000 registered candidates means competition will stay fierce. The outreach to 100 more companies is meant to narrow that gap, and the next two months will show whether employers respond.
