Spotify tightens Family plan sharing with in-person QR code checks

Spotify is tightening enforcement of its Spotify Family plan rules with new verification checks designed to confirm that everyone on a plan actually lives in the same household.

The company has started asking some Family plan members to complete an in-person QR code verification with the plan manager. Users who fail the check can lose Premium Family access and fall back to Spotify’s free, ad-supported service.

How the Spotify Family plan QR check works

When Spotify requests verification, the plan manager must open the Spotify mobile app, tap their profile picture, select Your Premium, and then tap Manage to display a QR code. The other Family member must scan that code using their own phone while both people are in the same place.

The QR code changes every few seconds, which makes it difficult to simply send someone a screenshot of it. Spotify says the verification works only through its mobile app, and both the manager and the member need to be physically together to complete the scan.

Family plan members have seven days after receiving the notification to complete the QR scan. If they cannot complete the verification or miss the deadline, they lose access to the shared plan.

The 12-month lockout

Losing Premium is only part of the penalty. Spotify also says affected users cannot join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months. They can instead subscribe to another eligible Premium plan, such as an individual subscription, or rejoin the original Family plan. If they do neither, they are moved to Spotify Free, which means ads between songs.

That year-long restriction is the real teeth of the policy. It turns a minor inconvenience into a meaningful penalty for anyone splitting a plan with friends or relatives who live at a different address.

An old rule, newly enforced

The household requirement itself is not new. Spotify has long required all Premium Family members to live at the same address, and its terms allow the company to periodically ask users to verify their home address. Members have previously been asked to provide their full address when joining a plan, when the plan manager changes address, or when Spotify cannot confirm a match.

If an address check fails, Spotify sends an email asking the user to verify again within seven days. A successful check keeps the account on Premium Family; a failed one moves the member to the free tier. Spotify says it does not track users’ locations for these checks and only verifies the submitted address.

The new QR system is therefore a stricter way of enforcing an existing rule. And some subscribers are already finding workarounds: reports on tech forums describe users bypassing the in-person requirement by screen-sharing the plan manager’s phone display over a video call, then scanning the live code from a second screen miles away.

Following the Netflix playbook

Spotify is not alone in cracking down on account sharing. Netflix’s password-sharing restrictions reset expectations across the streaming industry, and YouTube launched a similar crackdown on Premium family plans being used outside households in September 2025. Spotify itself raised Premium subscription prices in January 2026, adding financial pressure to the enforcement push.

For subscribers in Pakistan, where splitting a Family plan among friends or extended family is common, the message is clear: the Spotify Family plan is now meant strictly for people under one roof. Those sharing across addresses should expect a verification prompt, and they will have just seven days to prove they live together or face the free tier and a year-long lockout from shared plans.

As streaming platforms keep tightening the rules, from AI-generated music labels on YouTube Music to layoffs reshaping Netflix, the era of casual plan-sharing is clearly ending.

Frequently asked questions

How does Spotify’s QR code verification work?

The plan manager opens the Spotify mobile app, taps their profile picture, selects Your Premium, then Manage, to display a QR code. The Family member scans it with their own phone while both are in the same place. The code refreshes every few seconds.

How long do members have to verify?

Family plan members have seven days after receiving the notification to complete the QR scan.

What happens if verification fails?

Members lose Premium Family access and move to Spotify’s free, ad-supported tier. They also cannot join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months, though they can buy an individual Premium plan or rejoin the original Family plan.

Is the same-address rule new?

No. Spotify has always required Premium Family members to live at the same address. The QR code system is a stricter enforcement method; address checks via email already existed.
