Trump Endorses Netanyahu Nine Days Before Israel’s October 27 Election

US President Donald Trump endorses Netanyahu for re-election in a Truth Social post addressed to “the Great People of Israel”, nine days before Israel’s October 27 parliamentary election — Israel’s first national vote since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023.

Trump called Netanyahu “a great warrior prime minister” and a peace partner, crediting him with joining the United States in strikes on Iran in February. “Bibi Netanyahu has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition, including that coming from even Israel, itself,” he wrote.

“Please let this Letter serve to represent my Complete and Total Endorsement of Bibi Netanyahu in his upcoming Race for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Israel,” the post added.

What the endorsement letter said

The letter dwelled on the war with Iran, now in its seventh month after US-Israeli strikes began in February. Trump claimed the joint campaign had left Tehran “systematically destroyed, both Militarily and Financially”, arguing Iran would in time have attacked both countries.

“If Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so,” Trump wrote, hinting the United States could “soon finish the job” in Iran unless Tehran changes course.

Netanyahu responded within hours on X. “Thank you, President Trump, for the tremendous support and the joint work. Together we will complete the mission,” he wrote.

Trump endorses Netanyahu: why the timing matters

The endorsement lands nine days before the October 27 vote, the first since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Polls suggest no candidate has a clear path to power.

Yet the endorsement is not certain to help. Dawn noted that Israeli public support for Trump has diminished amid US-Israel disagreements over Iran. An Israel Democracy Institute poll found the share of Israelis who see Israel’s security as a central consideration for Trump fell from 44 per cent in June to 28 per cent in July.

Netanyahu’s main rival is the opposition bloc led by Yashar party head Gadi Eisenkot. Eisenkot thanked Trump for his support of Israel but said the choice belonged to voters. “Only the citizens of Israel will decide who will be the next prime minister,” he told Israel’s Channel 12.

A strained partnership

The full-throated backing reverses months of public hesitation. Until Sunday, Trump had held off endorsing Netanyahu, telling Time earlier this month: “I’m not involved in [Israeli] politics anymore.” The two leaders’ once-tight bond has loosened over Netanyahu’s failure to toe Trump’s line on Gaza, Lebanon and the Iran war, the Wall Street Journal has reported. Trump told Axios on Sunday, however, that the endorsement had never been in doubt. “I was always going to do that. I just didn’t want to do it too soon,” he said. “It is important that Israel has a person they can count on.”

What it means for Pakistan and the region

The endorsement matters for Pakistan because Trump’s Israel policy is now directly linked to his demands on Saudi Arabia. Trump has separately urged Riyadh to accept Israel’s help against the Houthis, a proposal that cuts across Pakistan’s defence commitments.

Pakistan is bound to Saudi Arabia by the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement signed on August 7, under which an armed attack on one signatory is treated as an attack on all. Islamabad has condemned both the US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Iranian strikes on Gulf states, as this publication reported, while reaffirming full solidarity with Riyadh against Houthi attacks, as it did alongside Egypt.

A Netanyahu victory, backed by Trump, would likely harden Washington’s line on Iran — the neighbour Pakistan shares a long border with. The region’s tangled alliances, from Azerbaijan-Turkiye strains to the helicopter crash that killed two Saudi pilots near Yemen, show how quickly one theatre spills into another.

What happens next

Israelis vote on October 27. If no party wins a clear path, weeks of coalition bargaining will follow — and the next government’s shape will decide whether the fragile regional order, from Gaza to the Strait of Hormuz, holds.

FAQ

When is the Israeli election?

Israel holds its parliamentary election on October 27, 2026, its first national vote since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023.

How is Israel’s prime minister chosen?

Israelis vote for parties, not directly for prime minister. The leader who can assemble a majority coalition in the 120-seat Knesset becomes prime minister.

What did Trump say about Iran in the endorsement?

Trump defended the US-Israeli strikes on Iran launched in February, claimed Iran had been “systematically destroyed, both Militarily and Financially”, and warned the US could “soon finish the job” unless Tehran changes course.
