Washington: The United States has approved a potential military sale worth around $5 billion to Saudi Arabia, including advanced bombs and guidance systems.
According to an international news report, the US State Department has cleared the sale of Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range (JDAM-ER) systems to the Kingdom.
The US arms sale to Saudi Arabia includes advanced munitions designed to improve the accuracy and range of aerial strikes.
Boeing will receive the main contract linked to the approved weapons package. The deal could further strengthen military cooperation between Washington and Riyadh.
Meanwhile, the US State Department has approved another major defense deal involving Saudi Arabia.
Under the second agreement, Saudi Arabia will purchase AGT-1500 engines worth approximately $750 million.
Honeywell will handle the contract. The company produces the engines for use in military armored vehicles, including combat tanks.
According to the US State Department, the US arms sale to Saudi Arabia will support the Kingdom’s ability to respond to both existing and emerging security threats.
The department also said the proposed weapons would help Saudi Arabia maintain its defense capabilities. The agreement therefore adds another major element to the long-standing military relationship between the two countries.
Furthermore, the latest decision comes as Washington continues to maintain close defense ties with Riyadh.

The Iraqi deal involves Bell 412EPX helicopters worth around $150 million. The agreement also includes equipment and support associated with the aircraft.

For Saudi Arabia, however, the US arms sale represents the largest deal among the recently announced packages.
The proposed $5 billion weapons package has attracted attention because of its size and the advanced nature of the military equipment involved.
