Saudi-led coalition says it intercepted five drones over Madinah and Eastern Province

RIYADH: The Saudi coalition intercepts drones threat continued on Wednesday, as the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis said it had intercepted and destroyed five drones launched toward Saudi Arabia, including over the Madinah region, home to one of Islam’s holiest cities.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said in posts on X that four drones had been intercepted and destroyed over Madinah and the Eastern Province. In a separate post, he said coalition forces had intercepted and destroyed another drone heading toward the Eastern region. He did not say who launched the drones, nor whether they caused damage or casualties.

The announcements, issued across October 20 and 21, cover separate incidents. Saudi outlets reported the two updates as a total of five intercepted drones.

A month of escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has come under sustained attack this month from the Iran-backed Houthis, including a strike on Riyadh’s international airport that was the kingdom’s deadliest in years, according to AFP reporting.

On Tuesday, the coalition said a Houthi ballistic missile launched toward Riyadh had been intercepted and destroyed, and that the launch platform used to fire it had been destroyed. Saudi civil defence issued an alert through the National Early Warning Platform before later announcing that the danger had passed.

The current wave of strikes follows coalition airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport in July, which broke a 2022 ceasefire that had largely halted fighting in Yemen’s civil war. Since then, fighting has intensified: late on Tuesday, Yemen’s government forces said they had thwarted Houthi attacks across Taiz, killing dozens of fighters.

Britain said on Tuesday it would expand its military support for Saudi Arabia to include “defensive” air patrols by Royal Air Force jets. Tom Barrack, the US envoy to Syria and Iraq, told the Global Security Forum in Doha that President Donald Trump supports Saudi Arabia and that Washington would supply the backing the kingdom needs logistically.

The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, has warned that the Houthis have imposed a siege on Taiz, cutting the city off from most supply routes and putting civilians at “grave risk”.

Why Madinah matters in the Saudi coalition intercepts drones reports

Madinah is the burial place of the Prophet Muhammad and home to the Prophet’s Mosque. Along with Makkah, it is one of Islam’s two holiest cities, and the Houthis have promised to spare both. Drones reaching Madinah’s skies would mark a significant escalation, which is likely why the coalition moved quickly to publicise the interceptions.

What the escalation means for Pakistan

Pakistan has deep stakes in Saudi security. Millions of Pakistanis live and work in the kingdom, and Islamabad signed a decade-long defence pact with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye this week under the Makkah alliance framework. A sustained air campaign against Saudi Arabia tests that commitment — and puts the safety of Pakistani workers in the kingdom firmly in focus.
