Test history: 2001–2026
From whitewash to turnaround. The teams first met in Tests in August 2001; Pakistan won 12 of the first 13 with one draw, including innings victories at Multan (2001) and Mirpur (2015). For two decades Bangladesh could not win a Test against Pakistan — then came August–September 2024: Bangladesh won both Tests in Pakistan (Rawalpindi), their first-ever Test series victory over Pakistan and a result that stunned the cricket world.
May 2026 confirmed it was no fluke. In the WTC 2025–27 series: at Mirpur, Bangladesh posted 413 and 240/9 declared against Pakistan’s 386 and 163 to win by 104 runs; at Sylhet, 278 and 390 beat 232 and 358 — a 78-run win and a 2-0 series. Bangladesh’s spinners and Pakistan’s batting collapses were the twin stories. More on the rivalry’s white-ball side in the live match hub.
World Test Championship context
WTC points on the line. Both the 2024 and 2026 series were part of ICC World Test Championship cycles (2023–25 and 2025–27 respectively), giving Bangladesh’s wins double significance: series glory plus WTC table points. Pakistan’s WTC campaigns have repeatedly stumbled against Bangladesh — a major factor in their mid-table finishes.
Pakistan’s next WTC assignment is the home series against Sri Lanka (Rawalpindi 9–13 Nov, Lahore 17–21 Nov 2026). Bangladesh’s 2026 home season continues with the West Indies Tests (28 Oct–1 Nov Mirpur, 5–9 Nov Sylhet). The WTC has given every Pakistan–Bangladesh Test real stakes — no more dead rubbers.
Records and memorable matches
The record book. Pakistan’s highest team total vs Bangladesh: 546/3 declared at Multan (2001). Memorable matches: the 2024 Rawalpindi Tests (Bangladesh’s breakthrough), Mirpur 2026 (Bangladesh’s 413 first-innings statement), and the 2003 Multan thriller. Bangladesh’s rise is built on spin-friendly home conditions and a generation of cricketers who no longer fear Pakistan.
For Pakistan, the inquest continues: batting collapses against spin, home defeats, and a Test side in transition. The rivalry’s next chapter — likely in the next WTC cycle — is now a genuine contest, not a foregone conclusion. The pillar guide tracks the rivalry across formats.
