The first-ever T20I tri-series between Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh — all seven matches at Hagley Oval, Christchurch (7–14 October 2022), as final preparation for the T20 World Cup in Australia. Schedule: NZ vs Ban (Oct 7), Pak vs NZ (Oct 8), Ban vs Pak (Oct 9), NZ vs Ban (Oct 11), Ban vs Pak (Oct 12), NZ vs Pak (Oct 13), Final (Oct 14). Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, finished level with New Zealand (3–1) and beat them in the final to take the trophy — the perfect World Cup warm-up (Pakistan would reach the final in Melbourne).

Pakistan beat New Zealand in the final at Hagley Oval — a statement win built on the bowling attack and Babar’s captaincy. Kane Williamson called the series “great preparation”; both finalists carried the form into the World Cup (NZ: semi-finalists, Pakistan: finalists). Latest: PCB Declines the Invite
No repeat — for now.
Bangladesh invited Pakistan (and Sri Lanka) for a T20I tri-series in December 2025 ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The PCB said no — workload management: players had played continuously (Asia Cup, South Africa series, Sri Lanka ODIs), and seniors held BBL and ILT20 NOCs (Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen, Haris Rauf). December, the PCB said, was not a suitable month. Bangladesh instead took their World Cup prep elsewhere.
2025–26
Pakistan’s Current Tri-Series
A different triangle.
After the Sri Lanka ODI series, Pakistan are playing a T20I tri-nation series with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe — their chosen World Cup prep instead of Bangladesh’s invite. Meanwhile Pakistan vs Bangladesh met as a bilateral: three T20Is in Lahore (May–June, Gaddafi Stadium) under new captain Salman Ali Agha and coach Mike Hesson (ex-NZ coach — the Kiwi connection). NZ vs Bangladesh T20Is are scheduled for December 2026.

Why Tri-Series Are Rare
Three is a crowd — in scheduling.
T20I tri-series are rare in men’s cricket — the calendar barely fits bilaterals, and three boards must align windows, venues and broadcast deals. That rarity is why Christchurch 2022 felt special: a mini-tournament with a final, group drama, and World Cup stakes. The women’s game uses tri-series more (Sri Lanka’s U19 Women’s T20 tri-series ran recently). When they happen, they’re box office — which is why Bangladesh keep proposing them.

Pakistan have a rich multi-team history: the Sharjah tri-series of the 1980s–90s (Pakistan, India, West Indies et al — the desert classics), the 2025 tri-series at home (Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa — NZ won the final in Karachi before the Champions Trophy), and now the Sri Lanka/Zimbabwe T20I triangle. The Pak-NZ-Ban triangle is the newest — and after 2022’s success, the most likely to return.
