Leeds: England secured a dominant victory over Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the first England vs Pakistan Test at Headingley. The hosts wrapped up the match on the third day and moved 1-0 ahead in the three-match series.
England strengthened their grip on the contest after scoring 409 runs in their first innings. As a result, the hosts gained a massive 238-run advantage and put Pakistan under immediate pressure.
Pakistan needed a strong batting response to keep the match alive. However, England’s fast bowlers attacked from the start and quickly exposed Pakistan’s struggling batting lineup.
Imam-ul-Haq suffered an early setback and returned without scoring. Meanwhile, Salman Ali Agha managed only four runs as England continued to control the second innings.
Azan Awais also struggled against the home side’s bowling attack. He scored nine runs before England removed him, increasing the pressure on Pakistan.
However, Mohammad Rizwan attempted to rescue the visitors with a fighting knock. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 41 runs and finished as Pakistan’s leading scorer in the second innings.
Shan Masood also tried to provide stability for Pakistan. However, the Pakistan captain could only contribute 29 runs before England broke another important partnership.
Abdullah Shafique added 15 runs to the total but could not turn his start into a major innings. Similarly, Saud Shakeel scored 14 as Pakistan continued losing wickets at regular intervals.
Khurram Shahzad contributed eight runs lower down the order. Meanwhile, Ali Usman managed seven as Pakistan moved closer to a heavy defeat.
Eventually, Pakistan’s second innings ended at just 135 runs. As a result, England completed an emphatic victory by an innings and 103 runs without needing to bat again.
England’s pace attack played a decisive role in the victory. Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer each claimed three wickets and gave Pakistan’s batters little opportunity to settle.
Moreover, the three pacers maintained constant pressure throughout Pakistan’s second innings. Their combined performance allowed England to finish the match comfortably on the third day.
Earlier, England’s batters had created the foundation for victory with a strong first-innings total. Harry Brook led the charge with an impressive 91 and narrowly missed out on a century.
Jordan Cox also played an important role for the hosts. In addition, experienced batter Joe Root and Dan Lawrence registered half-centuries to push England toward a commanding total.
Therefore, England reached 409 before Pakistan finally removed the last batter. That total gave the hosts a 238-run lead and complete control of the England vs Pakistan Test.
Despite England’s strong batting display, Pakistan found some encouragement through spinner Ali Usman. He claimed five wickets and emerged as the visitors’ most successful bowler.
Khurram Shahzad also delivered an effective spell and picked up three wickets. However, Pakistan could not stop England from building a match-winning first-innings advantage.
Pakistan then faced the difficult task of overcoming the huge deficit. Instead, another batting collapse ended their hopes of extending the contest into the fourth day.
Meanwhile, England maintained their intensity and refused to allow Pakistan to build meaningful partnerships. The home bowlers consistently attacked the stumps and forced Pakistan’s batters into mistakes.
The victory gives England an early advantage in the three-match series. More importantly, the commanding result will give the hosts significant confidence ahead of the next contest.
In contrast, Pakistan will need to address its batting problems quickly. Several top-order batters failed to make meaningful contributions, while only Rizwan and Masood offered notable resistance.
Pakistan’s bowlers showed promise during England’s innings, particularly through Ali Usman’s five-wicket haul. Nevertheless, the batting unit failed to capitalize on those individual bowling performances.
The opening England vs Pakistan Test also highlighted the strength and depth of England’s pace attack. Robinson, Tongue and Archer shared nine wickets in Pakistan’s second innings and ensured a quick finish.
