Russian Interior Minister Calls on Field Marshal Asim Munir at GHQ

RAWALPINDI: Russia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Vladimir Kolokoltsev, called on Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

During the meeting, both sides discussed matters of mutual interest and the prevailing regional security environment, with a particular emphasis on strengthening bilateral security cooperation between the two countries.

Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to deepen the longstanding relations with Russia and expand tangible cooperation in areas of shared interest, particularly in the security domain, according to the ISPR statement.

The two dignitaries underscored the importance of closer institutional linkages and improved coordination between the security institutions of Pakistan and Russia, noting that sustained engagement would serve the interests of both countries and contribute to regional stability.

Kolokoltsev, on the occasion, appreciated Pakistan’s contributions to regional peace and stability. He acknowledged the professionalism and sacrifices of the Pakistan Armed Forces in the fight against terrorism, the ISPR said.

The meeting reflects the growing trajectory of Pakistan-Russia relations, which have witnessed steady improvement in recent years with expanding cooperation in defence, security, trade and energy. Both countries have maintained regular high-level exchanges, signalling a shared commitment to deepening their strategic partnership.

Pakistan and Russia have been working to broaden their engagement beyond traditional areas, with security cooperation emerging as a key pillar of the relationship. The two sides have held joint military exercises and have expressed a mutual desire to enhance collaboration in counter-terrorism and regional security frameworks.

The visit of the Russian Interior Minister comes amid evolving regional dynamics, where both Islamabad and Moscow have shown keen interest in closer coordination on shared security challenges. Analysts view the engagement as part of Pakistan’s broader outreach to diversify its foreign policy partnerships while Russia continues to expand its footprint in South Asia.

The ISPR noted that both leaders expressed satisfaction over the current state of bilateral relations and agreed to continue working together for the promotion of peace, stability and mutual cooperation in the region.

Observers note that high-level military and security contacts between Pakistan and Russia have become more frequent, underscoring a maturing relationship built on pragmatism and shared concerns. The meeting at GHQ is the latest in a series of engagements that point to both countries placing greater value on direct institutional ties between their security establishments.
