Impersonator and three candidates caught cheating in Lahore matric exams
LAHORE: Inspection teams caught an impersonator and detected three cases of alleged Lahore matric exam cheating during the chemistry paper of the Lahore education board’s second annual matric examinations.
The irregularities came to light during surprise visits to examination centres by the chairman’s squad and the controller of examinations’ squad.
At a Government Higher Secondary School examination centre, officials caught Ali Haider allegedly sitting the paper in place of the registered candidate, Humayun Ijaz. In a separate incident at Government Jamia Higher Secondary School, candidate Waleed Ahmed was caught allegedly cheating during the examination.
Unfair means cases were also registered against Muhammad Raheel and Ali Hassan at Government Graduate College, Raiwind.
Board vows zero tolerance after Lahore matric exam cheating cases
Controller of Examinations Tauseefur Rehman said strict measures were being taken to maintain discipline at examination centres and eliminate organised cheating. He said the board would continue with a zero-tolerance policy against cheating and against groups involved in facilitating the use of unauthorised material during examinations.
Impersonation is treated as one of the most serious offences under board rules. A candidate caught sitting a paper for someone else, and the registered candidate on whose behalf the paper is attempted, can both face cancellation of results and a ban from appearing in board examinations for a fixed period.
What the second annual exams are
The second annual examinations are the Lahore board’s supplementary session. They are held for students who failed one or more subjects in the first annual exams, as well as for private candidates looking to improve their marks.
Because these candidates are often appearing under pressure to clear compartments and secure admission to colleges, the second annual session has historically seen a higher incidence of cheating attempts than the regular annual exams. That is why the board deploys the chairman’s and controller’s squads for unannounced visits alongside the regular supervisory staff.
The chemistry paper, a compulsory science subject for matric students, is one of the papers where inspection teams focus their surprise checks.
Why these raids matter
Cheating in board examinations has been a persistent problem in Punjab, with organised groups in some districts supplying solved papers and even arranging impersonators for a fee. The Lahore board’s public reporting of each caught case serves two purposes: it puts candidates on notice that inspection squads are active, and it creates a paper trail that makes it harder for unfair means cases to be quietly buried.
For the four candidates named in the latest raids, the immediate consequence is the registration of unfair means cases, which will be decided under the board’s disciplinary rules. For the board, the test will be whether the zero-tolerance policy announced by the controller translates into penalties that actually deter the next attempt.
