37,000 KP School Classrooms in Poor Condition, Officials Disclose

As many as 36,967 classrooms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s government schools are in a dilapidated condition, according to sources in the provincial Education Department.

The sources said 19,224 classrooms require full reconstruction, while another 17,743 need repairs. The province has 34,784 government schools. The figures concern individual classrooms, rather than the number of school buildings requiring work.

Separately, the Private Schools Regulatory Authority said 11,542 private schools are registered in KP. The authority does not maintain data on unregistered schools and takes action against them when it receives complaints.

What the education department says

Speaking about classroom infrastructure, Education Department Director Jaffar Mansoor said 1,000 new classrooms were being built using parent-teacher council funds. He said the province had more than 34,000 government schools containing hundreds of thousands of classrooms.

The disclosures come amid heightened concern over school building safety following the deadly roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar’s Dir Colony. Authorities have since directed the PSRA to draft safety regulations covering building standards, inspections, classroom capacity and emergency evacuation arrangements for private educational institutions.

A crisis the collapse exposed

The numbers give scale to a tragedy this newsroom has followed closely. The Dir Colony roof collapse killed more than 30 children, and our reporting has tracked its aftermath: the FIR against the owners and contractor, the families demanding justice, and the accusation that a former KP government weakened school laws.

Against that record, the classroom figures land hard. If 36,967 classrooms are dilapidated in government schools alone, and the private sector’s unregistered schools are not even counted, the Dir Colony disaster looks less like an isolated failure and more like the visible tip of a province-wide problem.

There is also a timing angle. The figures surfaced on the same day the provincial administration unveiled the Stable KP action plan, which pledges to improve 1,500 schools and address the furniture shortage for some 700,000 students. Set against 36,967 dilapidated classrooms, that pledge covers a fraction of the need. It is a start, but the gap between the promise and the problem is the story to watch.

For parents across KP, the question is simpler: which of these classrooms will be fixed before the next roof gives way?
