Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad took the team to the 2025 final — the campaign that shaped the T20 World Cup 2026 selection. Who was in it, how they played, and what it means for the continental rivalry with India and Sri Lanka.
Quick answer: Pakistan’s Asia Cup 2025 squad — built around Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan, Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah — reached the final, establishing the aggressive template coach Mike Hesson carried into the 2026 World Cup squad.

The 2025 Campaign
Pakistan arrived at the Asia Cup 2025 under a new white-ball regime — Hesson coaching, Agha captaining — and played the tournament with an intent not seen in years. Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan attacked powerplays; the middle order rotated strike; Shaheen and Naseem hunted with the new ball. It was the clearest statement yet of the post-Rizwan-Babar-opening-pair era.
Squad Core
The spine: Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan (openers), Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman (experience), Salman Ali Agha, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz (all-round balance), Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah (new ball), Abrar Ahmed (spin). Haris Rauf’s struggles in the final would later cost him his World Cup place.
The Final
Pakistan fell in the final — but finals are where squads are judged and rebuilt. The defeat sharpened selection: out went Rauf, in came fresh pace; the top order’s aggression was doubled down on, not abandoned.
Legacy for 2026
Every major call in the T20 World Cup 2026 squad traces to the Asia Cup: the keeper-batter logjam (Farhan, Usman, Nafay), the three-all-rounder balance, Abrar as the spin banker. The Asia Cup didn’t deliver the trophy — it delivered the blueprint. Full context in our squad pillar guide.
Has Pakistan won the Asia Cup?
Yes — twice, in 2000 and 2012 (ODI editions). The 2025 runners-up finish was their best T20-edition result in years.
When is the next Asia Cup?
The ACC rotates formats; following the 2025 T20 edition, the next tournament’s format and dates will be confirmed by the Asian Cricket Council.
