Pakistan Premier League Football: History, Champions and Records
The Pakistan Premier League was the top division of Pakistani football for nearly two decades — a league of departmental giants, dramatic final days and, eventually, administrative collapse. This is its complete history: every season, every champion and the records that still stand.
Quick answer: The Pakistan Premier League (PPL) ran from 2004 to 2021 as the PFF’s top division. Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) are the record champions with five titles (2009, 2011, 2012–13, 2013–14, 2018–19). The last completed season was 2018–19, won by KRL on goal difference; a 2021–22 season was abandoned amid FIFA’s suspension of the PFF.

Origins & Format
Pakistani football’s top flight was reorganised in 2004 as the National A Division Football League, renamed the Pakistan Premier League from 2005. It was a league of departmental teams — WAPDA, Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force, Khan Research Laboratories, K-Electric, Pakistan Airlines, Sui Southern Gas and others — playing a home-and-away round-robin, with relegation to the second-tier PFF League. Winners qualified for the AFC President’s Cup, Asia’s third-tier club competition.
Football’s heartlands gave the league its atmosphere: Chaman, the Balochistan town on the Afghan border, regularly drew crowds of around 15,000, while Karachi’s KMC Stadium hosted the showpiece fixtures.

Records & Notable Seasons
- Most titles: Khan Research Laboratories — 5 (2009, 2011, 2012–13, 2013–14, 2018–19). Next: WAPDA with 4, Pakistan Army with 2, K-Electric with 1.
- The 2018–19 finale: KRL and Pakistan Air Force finished level on 51 points; KRL’s 4–0 final-day win over Sui Southern Gas at Karachi’s KPT Stadium settled it on goal difference (+28 vs +27). KRL earned Rs 1.2 million, PAF Rs 900,000, third-placed SSGC Rs 600,000.
- Golden boots: WAPDA’s Arif Mehmood was the league’s great marksman of the 2000s (20+ goals in multiple seasons); KRL’s Kaleemullah Khan hit 35 goals in 2012–13, a league record; Army’s Ansar Abbas topped 2018–19 with 15.
- K-Electric’s breakthrough (2014–15): the Karachi side’s sole title broke a decade of WAPDA/Army/KRL dominance — the only championship won by a non-departmental-style traditional power in that span.
The End of the PPL
The league never recovered from the administrative crisis that followed 2019. A 2021–22 season was abandoned, and FIFA suspended the PFF — bans in 2017, 2021 and 2025 — over third-party interference, with normalisation committees running the game between bans. The recovery began in 2025–26: the PFF Congress approved FIFA-proposed constitutional reforms, the suspension was lifted, and under president Mohsen Gilani the federation announced a nationwide District Football Championship in June 2026, with a National Club Championship to follow — the intended successor pathway to the old Premier League.
