LAHORE: The Punjab government has revised school timings for non-formal schools across the province. The new schedule takes effect immediately and will remain in force until March 31, 2027.
Under the revised timings, non-formal schools will operate from 8:45am to 12:45pm, Monday through Saturday. The order was issued by the Directorate General of Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education on October 19.
What the order says
The order, issued with the approval of the competent authority, applies to all non-formal schools across Punjab and replaces the previous timings until the end of March 2027.
It also builds in flexibility. District officials can adjust school timings on a case-by-case basis to suit the needs of the target population, a practical concession given that non-formal schools serve learners whose daily routines often differ from mainstream schoolchildren.
The directorate has instructed districts to update the revised timings on the Non-Formal Education Management Information System (NFEMIS) portal immediately. It has also directed all District Education Officers (Literacy) across Punjab to ensure full compliance with the new schedule.
Why non-formal schools matter
Non-formal schools are a separate stream from the regular public school system. They are designed for out-of-school children and young people who missed mainstream schooling, offering basic literacy and primary-level education through shorter daily sessions and community-based setups.
Because these schools run shorter hours than formal schools, their timings shape when children can attend alongside work or family responsibilities. A fixed four-hour morning window, running six days a week, keeps the programme compact while leaving the rest of the day free for learners.
The directorate’s decision to let districts fine-tune the hours locally is significant. Attendance in non-formal programmes often depends on seasonal labour, harvest cycles and household needs, and rigid schedules have been a known reason for dropouts. Getting learning materials to students has been a challenge elsewhere too; primary students in Bajaur received long-delayed textbooks earlier this year.
Part of a busy month for Punjab education
The timing change lands in the middle of an active month for education policy in the province. The Punjab Teachers Union recently rejected the province’s 10 per cent enrolment increase target for formal schools, calling it unrealistic given teacher shortages and poor facilities, and demanding that targets be set school by school.
At the same time, the province has been pushing skills programmes, including its 50,000 IT internships with stipends for young people. The formal examination calendar is moving as well, with the matric date sheet for 2026 already announced. Together, the moves show a government working on several education fronts at once: literacy for out-of-school children, enrolment pressure on formal schools, and job-linked training for graduates.
