—

KHYBER: The repatriation of Afghan families was suspended for about two hours on Monday, while staff members of government offices were asked to leave, after a dispute over the repair or construction of a controversial checkpost on the Afghan side of the Torkham border.

Although there was no official statement on the controversy surrounding the repair or construction of the disputed Zangali checkpost, customs and immigration officials confirmed the temporary closure of their offices and the suspension of the repatriation process for undocumented Afghans.

Sabir Khan, a resident of Torkham, told Dawn that the repatriation of Afghans resumed after about two hours and the customs and immigration offices reopened. The situation remained tense until late afternoon, however.

He said residents were not asked to vacate their homes, while the Torkham market remained closed for three to four hours.

Operations resume after construction halted

Customs and immigration officials later confirmed that their operations, including the clearance of belongings of returning Afghan families and immigration procedures, had resumed after the Afghan authorities suspended construction work on the disputed checkpost.

Sources said a stern message from Pakistani border security officials to their Afghan counterparts helped avert a possible armed clash between the two sides.

The Zangali checkpost, located near the zero point of the Torkham border, has long been a bone of contention between the two neighbouring countries. Pakistani border security forces have repeatedly opposed its construction or repair, arguing that the site falls within a border area where both sides had previously agreed to refrain from building security-related structures.

Why Zangali keeps flaring up

This is not the first time a structure near the zero point has frozen the busiest crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The underlying disagreement is simple and stubborn: both sides agreed at various points not to build security installations in the immediate border zone, but each accuses the other of testing that understanding whenever construction equipment appears.

For Pakistan, the stakes go beyond one post. Torkham is the main artery for bilateral trade and the principal exit point for the ongoing repatriation of undocumented Afghans. Every hour of closure backs up trucks, strands families mid-journey and costs traders money on both sides.

The timing adds weight. Russia has offered a diplomatic off-ramp in the Pak-Afghan standoff, and any fresh border incident risks undercutting that fragile opening. Islamabad’s decision to send a stern message rather than escalate suggests it wants the crossing dispute contained, not converted into a wider confrontation.

Border closures have become a recurring pressure point. Our update on the Taftan-Iran border closure showed how quickly traders feel the pain when a crossing shuts, and the Kurram firing incident earlier this month showed how fast a local dispute can turn kinetic. Against that record, Monday’s two-hour freeze ending without shots fired counts as the system working, barely.

What happens next

With construction suspended and offices reopened, the immediate crisis has passed. But the Zangali question itself is unresolved, and it will return the next time either side moves equipment near the zero point. Until the two countries convert their informal understanding into a marked, monitored arrangement, Torkham will keep shutting down over the same few hundred metres of disputed ground.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Zangali checkpost?

It sits near the zero point of the Torkham border crossing in Khyber district, in an area where both countries had previously agreed to avoid building security-related structures.

Was anyone hurt in the dispute?

No casualties were reported. Residents were not asked to vacate their homes, though the Torkham market stayed closed for three to four hours.

Is the Torkham border open now?

Yes. Repatriation and customs and immigration operations resumed after about two hours once the Afghan authorities suspended construction work on the checkpost.
