Pakistan Army Generals: Serving Generals, Ranks & Leadership

The complete guide to Pakistan’s army generals — ranks explained, the current top leadership, key appointments and how the command structure works in 2026.

Last updated: 11 October 2026

Quick answer: Pakistan’s army is led by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who serves as both Chief of Army Staff and the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces (appointed November 2025, after the 27th Amendment abolished the old CJCSC post). The army’s general officers hold three ranks — Major General, Lieutenant General and General — plus the five-star Field Marshal, a rank held by only two officers in Pakistan’s history. Key appointments include the corps commanders, the principal staff officers at GHQ Rawalpindi and the DG ISI, Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik.

CDF & COAS

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir

Chief of Army Staff since November 2022; promoted to Field Marshal in May 2025 and appointed Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces in November 2025 for a five-year term — the first officer in the country’s history to hold both posts. Commissioned in the Frontier Force Regiment (1986); formerly DG MI and DG ISI.

DG ISI

Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik

Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence since 30 September 2024, and additionally Pakistan’s National Security Adviser since April 2025. Sword of Honour recipient; graduate of Fort Leavenworth and the Royal College of Defence Studies.

GHQ

Principal Staff Officers

The COAS is assisted at GHQ Rawalpindi by the Chief of General Staff (CGS), the Adjutant General, Quartermaster General, Military Secretary and Inspector General Training & Evaluation — all lieutenant generals. The October 2026 promotion board elevated 11 major generals to lieutenant general, refreshing these posts.

Our reporting: Field Marshal Munir’s CDF appointment followed the 27th Constitutional Amendment and the Defence Forces of Pakistan Act 2026, which gave one officer statutory command over the army, navy and air force for the first time — the most significant restructuring of Pakistan’s military command since 1976. The old Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee post was abolished; Gen (retd) Sahir Shamshad Mirza was its last holder (retired November 2025).

Ranks

Pakistan Army General Ranks Explained

From two-star to five-star — what each general’s rank means.

RankStarsWho holds it
Field Marshal5Ceremonial supreme rank — only two in Pakistan’s history: Ayub Khan and Syed Asim Munir (2025)
General4The Chief of Army Staff — the army’s professional head
Lieutenant General3Corps commanders, principal staff officers at GHQ, DG ISI, DG MI
Major General2Division commanders, directors-general of key directorates
Brigadier1Brigade commanders — a one-star officer, not counted among general officers

A common confusion: in the Pakistan Army, “general officers” means major generals and above — brigadiers are one-star officers but not generals. Promotions to general rank are decided by promotion boards and approved at the highest level; the COAS himself is appointed by the Prime Minister. There are well over a hundred serving generals at any time — the full roster is maintained on Wikipedia’s List of serving generals of the Pakistan Army, which tracks every major general, lieutenant general and general with their appointments.

Structure

Pakistan’s Military Command Structure in 2026

What the 27th Amendment changed — and what stayed the same.

1976

CJCSC created

The Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee post is created to coordinate the three services — but it carries no legal command over the navy or air force.

2022

Munir becomes COAS

Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir — former DG MI and DG ISI, Sword of Honour recipient — is appointed Chief of Army Staff for three years (later extended).

2025

Field Marshal + CDF

After the May 2025 conflict with India, Munir is promoted to Field Marshal; in November 2025 the 27th Amendment creates the Chief of Defence Forces post and abolishes the CJCSC.

2026

Defence Forces Act

Parliament passes the Defence Forces of Pakistan Act 2026, giving the CDF statutory operational command over all three services — plus the newly raised Army Rocket Force Command.

Below the CDF/COAS, the army’s fighting formations are the corps — each commanded by a lieutenant general — headquartered at cities including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Gujranwala, Bahawalpur and Mangla. GHQ in Rawalpindi houses the principal staff branches (General Staff, Adjutant General, Quartermaster General), the ISI and MI directorates, and the training and evaluation inspectorates. Two directorates deserve a clear distinction, because readers mix them up: the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) is Pakistan’s premier external-and-internal intelligence agency, headed by a lieutenant general (currently Asim Malik, who also serves as National Security Adviser); the MI (Military Intelligence) is the army’s own arm, focused on the force itself and headed by a major general. Both report up through the military chain — and both have been led, at different times, by the current Field Marshal.

Process

How Generals Are Appointed in Pakistan

Promotion boards, tenures and who decides.

1

Promotion boards

Brigadiers are promoted to major general — and major generals to lieutenant general — by promotion boards chaired by senior generals, weighing service records, courses (Staff College, NDU) and command performance.

2

The COAS appointment

The Chief of Army Staff is appointed by the Prime Minister from among the senior-most lieutenant generals. The standard tenure is three years, extendable — Munir received an extension in 2024.

3

The CDF term

Under the 2026 framework, the Chief of Defence Forces serves a fixed five-year term with statutory command over the army, navy and air force — reporting to the federal government.

•

Tenures below the top

Lieutenant generals typically serve until the statutory retirement age, with key appointments (corps command, GHQ branches) lasting two to three years before rotation — which is why the generals’ list is a living document, refreshed by every promotion board and posting cycle.

History

Past Army Chiefs of Pakistan: A Brief Roll

The commanders who shaped the institution — in brief.

1951

Ayub Khan

Pakistan’s first Pakistani-origin COAS (1951–58); later Field Marshal and President — the only other five-star officer in the country’s history besides Asim Munir.

1969–71

Yahya Khan

COAS during the 1971 war and the secession of East Pakistan — the most traumatic chapter in the army’s history.

1976–88

Zia-ul-Haq

Seized power in 1977; his eleven-year rule Islamised laws and deepened the army’s political role. Died in a 1988 air crash.

1999–2007

Pervez Musharraf

Took power in the 1999 coup; COAS and President through the post-9/11 years until resigning in 2008.

2007–13

Ashfaq Parvez Kayani

Oversaw the return to barracks after Musharraf; served an extended six-year tenure.

2013–16

Raheel Sharif

Led Operation Zarb-e-Azb against militancy; left as one of the most popular chiefs of the modern era.

2016–22

Qamar Javed Bajwa

Served six years (with extension); tenure ended November 2022.

2022–

Asim Munir

Current chief — first COAS to have headed both MI and ISI, first Sword of Honour recipient as chief, first Field Marshal while serving, first CDF.

The pattern across seven decades: the army chief’s personality and tenure length have repeatedly shaped Pakistan’s politics — from Ayub and Zia to Musharraf. Munir’s tenure breaks the mould differently: not through a coup, but through constitutional restructuring that concentrates tri-service command in one office.
