The King Fahd Causeway, the sole road link between Saudi Arabia and the island nation of Bahrain — was shut down early Tuesday following escalating threats of Iranian strikes.
The King Fahd Causeway Authority confirmed the closure through a statement posted on X, revealing that all vehicle traffic had been halted as a safety precaution due to Iranian attacks directed at Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
Stretching 25 kilometers (15.5 miles), the causeway serves as Bahrain’s only land-based connection to the Arabian Peninsula. Bahrain also hosts the headquarters of the United States Navy’s 5th Fleet, making the closure strategically significant.
The shutdown comes as US President Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran rapidly approaches. Trump has demanded that Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday at 8:00 PM Eastern Time, warning that failure to comply would result in American strikes on Iranian power infrastructure and bridges.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump stated he is “not at all” worried about potential war crimes accusations tied to his threats of destroying civilian infrastructure inside Iran.
