Gul Plaza compensation: Sindh govt approves Rs7bn relief

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved a Rs7 billion relief package for Gul Plaza victims. He also confirmed that Rs5.6 billion has already been secured. Meanwhile, the government distributed Rs511 million among 200 verified affectees.

Earlier this year, a massive fire hit Gul Plaza. As a result, more than 70 people lost their lives. In addition, hundreds of shops were destroyed. Therefore, many families and traders suffered huge losses.

Speaking at the CM House, Murad Ali Shah called the tragedy deeply painful. He said the government is taking strong steps to support victims. First, the government announced Rs10 million for each of the 72 deceased victims. So far, authorities have paid 64 families. However, four cases are still under verification. Meanwhile, four remain pending due to legal issues.

Next, the government helped shopkeepers. It gave Rs500,000 each to 849 traders during Ramadan. This step helped them restart their businesses.

Moreover, the government approved the full Rs7 billion package. Out of this, Rs5.657 billion has already been arranged through official channels. The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry is verifying claims. Therefore, payments are being made after proper checks.

In the current phase, the government issued cheques worth Rs511.7 million. These were given to 200 verified victims. At the same time, officials will release payments to others after verification.

According to KCCI, Gul Plaza had 1,209 shops. So, authorities are calculating compensation based on inventory losses.

Murad Ali Shah expressed support for the victims. He said money cannot fully cover their losses. However, he assured continued help. He also praised the courage of affected families and traders.

Furthermore, he stressed the need for better safety measures. He said the government will take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.

In addition, he spoke about the investigation report. He said a committee will implement its recommendations. The committee will present its plan in the next cabinet meeting. He also promised strict accountability.

“Those responsible will face action,” he said.

Meanwhile, Asif Ali Zardari raised the issue with Chinese authorities. As a result, a Chinese company visited Karachi twice. It also prepared a firefighting plan to improve emergency systems.

Finally, the chief minister distributed 129 cheques at the ceremony. He also promised to rebuild Gul Plaza. The new building will have the same number of shops. It is expected to be completed within two years.
