U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held an important telephone conversation on Tuesday, aiming to finalize a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
According to the White House, the U.S. is working towards a temporary ceasefire to pave the way for ending the ongoing war.
According to CNN, the call began at 10 AM (Eastern Time), during which Trump discussed possible concessions from Russia, including the withdrawal of troops from occupied territories.
Trump told reporters that negotiations also covered land, energy projects, and other resources.
The Kremlin confirmed that Putin was prepared for the discussion, and Russian officials had already devised a strategy for the negotiations.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino stated that the call lasted for more than an hour and progressed positively.
Last month, following a conversation between Trump and Putin, the U.S. had taken steps to facilitate negotiations, leading to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington. However, tensions escalated during the meeting when Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance pressured Zelensky, resulting in the temporary suspension of military aid.
After negotiations led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, a 30-day ceasefire plan was proposed and accepted by Ukraine.
Now, the U.S. is trying to persuade Russia to agree to the deal. According to Trump, “Russia holds all the leverage.”
Meanwhile, U.S. officials have indicated that future talks will cover territorial boundaries and security cooperation. Additionally, access to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and Black Sea ports could also be included in the agreement.
The White House has stated that both sides are very close to finalizing a ceasefire deal, and a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin is also under consideration.
