NADRA Explains What First-Time CNIC Applicants Need
KARACHI: NADRA has outlined the first-time CNIC requirements for Pakistani citizens aged 18 and above who want to apply for their first Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) — the single most important identity document in the country.
The CNIC is required for everything from opening a bank account and getting a passport to voting and registering a SIM. For young adults turning 18, understanding the first-time CNIC requirements before visiting a NADRA centre can save a wasted trip — and knowing exactly which documents to carry means the difference between walking out with a token number and being sent home to fetch paperwork.
Documents needed for a first-time CNIC
Applicants whose parents or siblings are registered with NADRA must prepare the required documents before submitting their applications. The core requirements are:
- The CNIC number of a parent or blood relative
- The Child Registration Certificate (B-Form) number, or the Computerised Birth Registration Certificate’s CRMS number
Applicants can have their application forms verified through biometric authentication by a parent or a sibling aged 18 or above. If biometric verification is not possible, a gazetted officer or public representative can verify the application form instead.
What if you were born abroad?
For applicants born abroad, NADRA requires additional documents: a foreign birth certificate, an S1 form, or a citizenship or naturalisation certificate. These establish the applicant’s claim to Pakistani citizenship before the CNIC can be issued.
Applicants can visit their nearest NADRA Registration Centre to submit their applications. NADRA has been pushing more of its services online — 99 per cent of its payments are now digital — but first-time CNIC issuance still requires an in-person visit for biometrics and photographs.
Tips before you visit
Check that the parent or sibling whose CNIC number you will use is themselves registered and their record is up to date; mismatches between family records are the most common reason applications get held up. Carry originals of the B-Form or birth certificate, and if relying on a gazetted officer for verification, confirm their availability in advance.
