WhatsApp Guest Calls Let Anyone Join Without an Account

KARACHI: The new WhatsApp guest calls feature lets people join a WhatsApp call without having an account, downloading the app or installing anything at all. WhatsApp has started rolling it out to users on the latest versions of its Android and iOS apps.

Guests join straight from a web browser. WhatsApp says the calls are free, have no time limit and stay protected with end-to-end encryption.

How WhatsApp guest calls work

Only account holders can start a guest call. The host opens the Calls tab, taps the “+” button and creates a call link, which can then be shared with anyone through any channel.

The guest opens the link in a browser, types in a name and waits in a virtual waiting room. The host must approve each guest manually before they can enter. Guest calls work for one-to-one conversations and group calls with up to 32 participants.

Once inside, guests get most of the familiar calling tools. They can share their screen, react with emojis and raise a hand to speak.

There are clear limits. Guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages during the call or invite additional people. The host can remove a guest at any time or end the call for everyone.

Privacy stays intact

WhatsApp says guest calls keep end-to-end encryption. The web client creates a unique identifier that secures the call, allowing guests to take part without holding a regular WhatsApp account.

The waiting room approval gives hosts control over entry, while hidden phone numbers keep personal details private. For readers conscious about staying safe on messaging apps, the design closes the obvious gaps that browser-based joining could open.

Calendar integration is coming next

WhatsApp is also building integrations with Google Calendar and Outlook. Users will be able to attach call links directly to calendar invitations through a plugin, and invitees will be able to join the meeting even without a WhatsApp account. The company expects to launch the feature later this year.

Rollout is gradual

The rollout is gradual, so the option may not appear for everyone immediately. WhatsApp has not announced when the feature will reach all users. Keeping the app updated is the only way to get it early, and a sluggish phone can delay updates, so it helps to keep your device running smoothly.

Why it matters in Pakistan

The feature suits how many Pakistanis already use the app. Freelancers can take client calls without asking clients to install anything. Tutors can run group sessions for students who only have a browser. Small businesses can hold quick video meetings with suppliers, and relatives whose phones are out of storage can join from a shared tablet or computer.

Browser-based calls still need a stable connection. Users on patchy mobile data may prefer a home broadband link, and Zong’s 5G home broadband plans show what that costs. The PTA’s rules on mobile package pricing shape the cost of calling over cellular data. As institutions digitise further, Karachi University’s digitisation drive shows where everyday communication is heading.
