Trent Boult Signs One-Year Deal with Sydney Thunder for BBL 2026-27
The Trent Boult Sydney Thunder deal is official. Sydney Thunder have signed the New Zealand left-arm quick on a one-year contract for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season, with the 37-year-old available for the entire campaign, including the finals. The announcement came on October 15, 2026.
Boult will join fellow New Zealander Lockie Ferguson at the club, forming a right-arm and left-arm new-ball pair with years of international experience between them.
Why the Trent Boult Sydney Thunder Deal Matters
Head coach Andrew Flintoff sees the signing as the fix for Thunder’s weakest area. “Trent has an amazing reputation for being a great bloke, a team player and a world-class performer,” Flintoff said, adding that the side had struggled to take wickets with the new ball and that the Boult-Ferguson pair should remedy it.
Flintoff took charge in June 2026, replacing Trevor Bayliss after Thunder finished last in 2023-24 and 2025-26. Signing a proven winner like Boult is the clearest sign yet of a rebuild aimed at climbing off the bottom of the table.
Boult said he was eager to start. “I’m really excited to be playing in the Big Bash again and joining Lockie at Thunder,” he said in the club release, adding that he still loved going out, taking wickets and attacking in the powerplay.
Boult’s BBL Return
This is Boult’s second BBL stint. He played eight matches for the Melbourne Stars in 2022-23.
He arrives in form. Boult was the second-highest wicket-taker for the Edinburgh Castle Rockers in the first European T20 Premier League season, taking 16 wickets at 6.63. Across the major leagues he has 145 wickets in 125 IPL matches at 8.49, plus 54 in 37 MLC games, 25 in 22 ILT20 matches and 19 in 21 SA20 outings.
The SA20 Wrinkle
One clash looms. The BBL ends on January 26 while the SA20 starts in South Africa on January 17, and Boult is also contracted to MI Cape Town from January 20. He would only avoid an overlap if Thunder’s league stage ends on January 17 in Brisbane and he flies straight to South Africa. It is a problem Thunder will gladly face if it means they are winning.
A Busy December
Thunder open against the Adelaide Strikers at Sydney’s Giants Stadium on December 16. The BBL runs alongside a crowded international window, with Pakistan starting home preparations for the ODI tri-series, England arriving in Islamabad on Friday and Sri Lanka losing Pathum Nissanka for the series.
