Last updated: 11 October 2026

Asim Iftikhar Ahmad is the 34th Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, appointed on 9 September 2026 and taking charge on 15 October 2026, succeeding Amna Baloch. A career diplomat who joined the Foreign Service in 1993, he served as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (April 2025 – October 2026, including the UN Security Council presidency in July 2025), Ambassador to France (2022–2024), Ambassador to Thailand (2017–2021) and Foreign Office spokesperson (2021–2022). Born in Lahore on 27 November 1966, he is a gold-medal electrical engineer from UET Lahore.

September – October 2026

Appointed 34th Foreign Secretary

The announcement came on 9 September 2026 — the UN envoy called home to lead the Foreign Office.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced on 9 September 2026 that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had approved the appointment of Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad — then Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN — as the country’s 34th Foreign Secretary. He succeeds Amna Baloch, the 33rd Foreign Secretary (in office since 11 September 2024), who retired from government service on 17 September 2026 and was subsequently appointed Pakistan’s Ambassador to Türkiye.

Ahmad is scheduled to take charge on 15 October 2026, returning to Islamabad from New York. His designated successor at the UN is Nabeel Munir, the Foreign Office’s Special Secretary for UN affairs, whose formal appointment was expected after the UN General Assembly session. Because Ahmad reaches the superannuation age of 60 on 27 November 2026, reports suggest the government plans a two-year contractual extension — not formally confirmed at the time of writing.

1966 – 1993

Early life and education

A Lahore-born engineer who topped two universities before choosing diplomacy.

Asim Iftikhar Ahmad was born in Lahore on 27 November 1966. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Punjab in 1988 — with a gold medal — and then a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, in 1991 — again with a gold medal.

He joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1993, beginning a diplomatic career that would span more than three decades across four continents. His first posting abroad was Niamey, Niger (1997–2000).

1993 – 2026

Three decades, three ambassadorial postings, and a specialisation in multilateral diplomacy.

The through-line of his career is multilateral diplomacy: two extended postings at Pakistan’s UN Mission in New York, a stint as Deputy Chef de Cabinet to the UN General Assembly President, and permanent-representative roles at both UNESCAP (Bangkok) and UNESCO (Paris), where he served as Vice-Chair of the Asia-Pacific Group in the Executive Board. As Foreign Office spokesperson (2021–2022), he became one of the most recognisable faces of Pakistani diplomacy.

2025 – 2026

At the United Nations

Eighteen months in New York — including a month presiding over the Security Council.

On 1 April 2025, Ahmad presented his credentials to Secretary-General António Guterres as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, succeeding Munir Akram. His tenure coincided with Pakistan’s 2025–26 term on the UN Security Council — and in July 2025 he served as President of the Security Council, steering its programme during a month of intense Middle East diplomacy.

He led Pakistan’s delegation through the 81st UN General Assembly session (September 2026) — his final major assignment before the Foreign Secretary appointment took him home.

As Foreign Secretary: what to expect

The Foreign Secretary is the administrative head of the Foreign Office — the top of Pakistan’s diplomatic bureaucracy.

As Foreign Secretary, Ahmad heads the Foreign Office bureaucracy, oversees the Foreign Service, and implements the foreign policy set by the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. He takes over at a demanding moment: Pakistan is navigating regional tensions, a new defence agreement with Saudi Arabia, the SCO summit Pakistan is to host, and an active UN Security Council term — all while managing a major diplomatic reshuffle across world capitals.

The Foreign Office said it was confident that under his leadership it would advance Pakistan’s interests “with clarity, professionalism and purpose.”

Personal life

Family, and three very different sports.

Ahmad is married to Asma and has three daughters. Away from diplomacy he is an enthusiast of golf, tennis and snooker — a sporting range that colleagues say mirrors his diplomatic style: patient, precise, and comfortable playing the long game.
