Como Thrash Manchester United 4-1 in Champions League Rout
Nico Paz produced a brilliant individual display as Como thrashed Manchester United 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday night, scoring twice and setting up another in a famous win at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
The Como Manchester United clash was the first time United had visited Como in the Champions League. The hosts made the occasion count within two minutes.
Paz runs the show
Como struck in the second minute when Paz, the former Real Madrid player, found space and curled an effort into the net. The Argentine ran United’s defence ragged all evening.
United came out with more intensity after the break but were caught again. Paz slipped a neat pass to Tasos Douvikas, who lifted the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens to make it 2-0 in the 49th minute.
Things got worse for the visitors. Carlos Baleba gave the ball away to Paz near the halfway line, and the forward charged into the box untouched before driving his second goal home in the 57th minute.
Como’s fourth arrived in the 76th minute. Centre-back Jacobo Ramon rose highest to head in from close range after a perfect cross from Kaiki.
United grabbed a late consolation in stoppage time through Joshua Zirkzee, but there were no celebrations from the away end. It was too little, too late.
Nico Paz: the two-goal hero
Paz was the difference between the sides. The Argentine, a former Real Madrid player, opened the scoring inside two minutes with a curled finish, then turned provider for Douvikas’s goal four minutes after the restart.
His second goal summed up his evening. Baleba’s loose pass near the halfway line fell to Paz, who drove at the United defence, went past every challenge and finished with power. One goal, one assist and a hand in the move that broke United’s resistance: a complete attacking display.
Como Manchester United: what the result means
For Como, the victory is a statement on Europe’s biggest stage: a 4-1 win over one of the continent’s most famous clubs, built around their Argentine playmaker, who looks ready for the very top.
For United, it was a sobering night. Michael Carrick’s side were second best in every department, and the manner of the defeat will raise fresh questions about their European credentials. Their defence was opened up far too easily.
United must regroup quickly. They return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Bournemouth at Old Trafford, and Carrick will demand an immediate response.
