Mark Allen Reveals 10 Weeks in Mental Health Clinic Before Return
Former world number one Mark Allen has revealed he spent ten weeks in a mental health clinic before being discharged to play in the Northern Ireland Open, his first snooker tournament in nearly six months.
The 40-year-old Northern Irishman returned to action this week in Belfast, where he lost in the first round to his old friend Jordan Brown. Afterwards, he spoke with striking honesty about the months that kept him away from the sport.
“I literally didn’t see a future in anything”
Allen wrote on X on Wednesday that he had been in the clinic for ten weeks before his discharge. He said he owed it to his family, and especially his daughter, to play in Belfast for what could be the last time.
“I’m not ok, but I’m ok in that itself,” he wrote. “I’ve been much worse in the last few months than you saw yesterday. I literally didn’t see a future in anything.”
He credited his daughter, his therapists, the clinic staff and fellow patients with helping him through “some really dark days”. “I see the light now that I couldn’t see before but I do now,” he added. “I’m a work in progress.”
Allen said the fighting qualities that defined his career at the table must now be shown away from it. “My fight and determination on the table has always been there for ones to see. I need to show those same fighting qualities off it now for a while.”
The Crucible defeat that broke him
The roots of the crisis go back to May. Allen, who was ranked world number one in 2024, missed a match-winning black in an epic World Championship semi-final against eventual champion Wu Yize at the Crucible.
He admitted he had been considering retirement while in a “bad place”, and said he did not want that semi-final to be remembered as his last match. He only agreed to play in Belfast because he was drawn against his friend Brown.
Brown, who beat Allen for the first time in his career, hopes the defeat does not end the story. “The first words I said to him today was it was great to see him back and we had a big cuddle,” he said after Tuesday’s match. “It is tough to see him going through that.”
He added: “I have no doubt he will come back. Snooker is his love, he is absolutely brilliant and he is a top bloke. I wish him all the best.”
Mark Allen’s snooker future
Allen’s openness adds to a growing conversation in professional sport about mental health and the pressure of elite competition. Whether he continues playing remains his decision. For now, his priority is recovery, one day at a time.
